A coin flip

I watch as they place the coin on their thumb
It flies into the air with such force, and all I can hope is that it never lands
Because I've made it this far without unwanted hands on my thighs
50% of women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime
Society has created a coin flip on whether my body is to be treated as my own
It's left up to a ing coin whether I become a statistic in the eyes of the justice system.
A coin decides if he sees my clothing as bait.
A coin chooses whether those perverse whispers will ring in my ears on a constant loop.
A coin will spin in the air with my trust in its palms
It's in the air, and as I see it spinning, I can feel the keys between my knuckles and my vocal cords strained from cries no one came to stop.
Heads or tails? Will I be nothing more than a means to an end for a man?
Heads or tails was my skirt asking for "it"?
Heads or tails did no actually mean no?
How could I ever explain that to her?
To the daughter I hope to bore.
Should I have to warn her about the danger night brings or the weight of lingering eyes?
I'm scared to become a woman, a statistic, a victim, a survivor
A mother
I hope the coin lands in my favor
In her favor
In every woman’s favor
Yet this isn't so
So we sit and watch the coin spin above our heads with tears in our eyes
Hoping, praying, and begging for it to land in our favor rather than the thirty-second pleasure of a man who thinks of us as property.
And yet it seldom does.
