A Christmas Tragedy

In the beginning, there were eight,
but one of them wasn't feeling great.
When he went to heaven,
there were only seven.

Another mysteriously departed from the mix,
as the count decreased to six.

Alas, one more was no longer alive.
The tally was reduced to five.

Was there some kind of predator?
The total was now at four.

When I next checked in to see,
I saw only three.

We share a house, me and you.
Now there are but two.

What's your alibi?  You have none.
Now, there's only one.

So, I'll eat the last chocolate but,
I hope you left one with a nut.

Like and then there was one. Wasn't that the title of one of her books?
