A Child and a Whippoorwill

"Twas the evening hour,
and the world was still.
All but a child
and a whippoorwill...

But I chanced to hear
as twilight smiled,
The song of a mother
to her child.

Tranquil and warm,
Sweet and deep,
Rocking, rocking
the child to sleep.

Singing , singing
of stars above,
Singing, singing
of love.

"Twas the dawning hour,
and the world was still.
All but a child,
and a whippoorwill...
