A Brief Candle
A small flame flickers, it casts a wavering light on a silent room
Moments of sudden glare as it burns bright then returns to a glow
Caught by breeze it waves side to side like a hula dance
Or softly stills, a cone of heat, orange, focused
I sit in peace and watch it’s play
This little warm mirror, inside I can see my reflected self
A private tiny fire, it feels good to do this sometimes
To choose a view on my memories, contemplate
And then it is extinguished, gone
Takes my thoughts, a loss at first then a grateful sense
How much I saw in this brief candle flame
