Notes About The Poem

Not only does he have many aches and pains due to hard labor all his life in the field of construction, my husband  also suffers from anxiety and depression, for which he takes meds. His childhood was very difficult, and over the years I have to admire him for overcoming the mang negative things he had to deal with growing up.

A Birthday Wish For Joe

He doesn’t like to socialize, nor does
he laugh at funny shows the way I do.
He suffers chronic pain and frets because
he’s worked so long and hard his whole life through.

We’ve had our ups and downs, and that’s for sure,
but I can overlook the bad. Our love
has grown through many years and will endure
because there’s one thing I am certain of.
My husband’s there for me! Though he may lack
a way with words, much tact or great finesse,
I know deep down – he’ll always have my back.
Each year as we grow greyer, he feels stress.
My birthday wish for him is that he’ll find
contentment and – at last – some peace of mind.

A fantastic tribute to Joe! I am sure that he is appreciative. We are both married to a Joe and we both have an Angela. My Angela is actually Angela Jo. Nicely done my friend. Bravo!

Hello Andrea ... wonderfully written on a delicate topic. However, many readers will feel that your sonnet will reflect on their own trials - thank you Andrea - Lindsay

Oh Andrea I know how you feel. I have the same problem and it has caused much sadness and resentment in our marriage. Mine can't express his love but he has no problem expressing his anger. He is king of the put down artists. Great job here. God Bless and Happy Birthday to Joe. JB

You are so good to put up with it, Judy. I understand how anger can be a major emotion for people like your husband and mine. Joe expresses his love to me but never enough to his children. Also, he has mellowed over time, which makes things nice. I could not have stayed otherwise.

Love the realism of your spouse. Shows you are genuine, Andrea. For a lot of us, we have had our ups and downs but there is something to be said about an enduring and shared life together. May your husband find contentment and peace of mind.

The things going on in the world right now are really bringing him down. I am sure this is the case for many of those with his problems. It's so sad to me how governments are handling our freedoms and bringing people to suicide by their poor decision making. Joe and I hardly watch the news right now because of the constant fear-mongering. It's very draining on the soul.

My Bday was the 5th. Thanks, Richard. My husband does communicate with me, but he just doesn't like to socialize even at family events, and it would be so nice if he would make more effort with relatives!

This is well expressed. I hope he finds his contentment. Depression and anxiety is much more difficult when one is not inclined to communicate.

Andrea, Please share my Happy Birthday wishes for your hard working Joe. 'I know deep down – he’ll always have my back' - Pure devotion in this poem for your dear one so stricken. You wield words with caring poise such that the gargoyles of Notre Dame would hide their faces. Still such a wonder in life, and just as much in a wife. Also, an insta-Fave. -Richard
