A Bird Sings In the Garden

There’s no traffic,
On the narrow street,
No people talking
Not even rain or wind.

My room is quiet.
But my mind is full
Of noise, the chatter of
Conflicting emotions.
Problems to be solved,
Questions unanswered
Decisions to be made.

Then, suddenly, I hear it,
Cutting through the chaos
Of my troubled thoughts,
A high sweet trill of gladness.

The melody of a songbird
Perching on a branch
Outside my window,
Her tiny breast bursting
With the pure joy
Of being alive in spring.

The magical notes
Bring tears to melt away
The cares of the day,
And my heart feels and hears
Only the music of her song.
