A Bird Of My Soul

Here is the English translation of my poem “Mon Pakhi” which has been published in the special edition of a magazine “Banglaworldwide” on September 22, 2025. I felt inspired to translate the poem in English for my friends who are truly interested in going deep in the lyrics, but do not speak Bengali.

MON-PAKHI (A Bird of My Soul)

For many decades, I let my heart stay caged somewhere in the corner.

Dear Heart, I didn't have time to dream.
Please return when all the things keeping me occupied are done.

I will rise at mesmerizing dawn to gaze at the clouds gliding in the azure sky like white Kash flowers,
I will imagine a garden far away where ravishing Dahlias and Magnolias bloom.

When the soft twilight descends on mountains, and
The sky turns vermillion red,
I will leave all my work, and listen to cooing of the home-coming birds,
One or two are lost and forlorn, sadly they wait for their mates,
The mates may not find them,
And fly to a different nest.

Today I have time to chat with my heart,
Today I have time to ask her how she is,
In a pensive mood, sometimes I ask myself - why am I worrying about her?
She is alright.

And then I ponder - this bird a lonely soul,
Wistfully she pines for the friend who flew away long ago,
Her only way to be happy is spreading her wings in the horizon,
No cage can hold her back any more.
