50 Words for Poe: Epoché
A short stay in Hell is often part of the journey required to reach Home Sometimes one finds oneself recidivist re-haunting the lava pit It’s the forward and return stay in Purgatory that’s the real Trip Terror Fell (Room 10, Asylum) He handed back the key She closed the panel Her Epoché remained in his hands although, of this he was keenly aware, she was sorely amiss he could still taste the Rosemary over Thistle in her kiss Of course, She had Room 9 to attend to... Compelling ... I enjoyed the layers. I believe suspension of disbelief leads directly to, (or perhaps more accurately, is a direct result of), imagination, the often underappreciated and least-discussed tool that we wield as purveyors of the written word. I enjoy creating layers in my pieces, (many of which go unacknowledged), but I also always leave a sensible surface. If folks don't decipher the layers, that's ok, if they do, they get something extra. Still a newbie at this - still learning.

I was never any good at following rules. I just write....sensible? are you serious? The word is missing from my vocabulary. Sensible, in my world, never got anyone anywhere. A little bit of risk is not a bad thing, a big bit of risk, is revolutionary? Thanks Greg, you must write how you feel is "YOU" and to Hell with the rest.

"Sympathy constitutes friendship; but in love there is a sort of antipathy, or opposing passion. Each strives to be the other, and both together make up one whole." Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Epoché ("suspension") is an ancient Greek term typically translated as "suspension of judgment" but also as "withholding of assent".

Suspended judgement is a cognitive process and a rational state of mind in which one withholds judgements, particularly on the drawing of moral or ethical conclusions. The opposite of suspension of judgement is premature judgement, usually shortened to prejudice, or in some philosophical systems such as Pyrrhonism the opposite is dogma.

While prejudgement involves drawing a conclusion or making a judgement before having the information relevant to such a judgement, suspension of judgement involves waiting for all the facts before making a decision. Within philosophy, suspension of judgement is typically associated with positivism and skepticism, most especially Pyrrhonism where it is referred to as epoché, but it is not limited to these areas.

The 17th century rationalist René Descartes, for example, used it as the cornerstone of his epistemology. In a process that he called methodological skepticism, he asserted that in order to gain a solid foundation when building one's system of knowledge and belief, one must first doubt everything. Only by eliminating preconceptions and prejudgments can one come to know what is true.

Suspension of Disbelief The term suspension of disbelief or willing suspension of disbelief has been defined as a willingness to suspend one's critical faculties and believe something surreal; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment. con'td

The term was coined in 1817 by the poet and aesthetic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who suggested that if a writer could infuse a "human interest and a semblance of truth" into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgement concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Suspension of disbelief often applies to fictional works of the action, comedy, fantasy, and horror genres. Cognitive estrangement in fiction involves using a person's ignorance to promote suspension of disbelief

"Reviewers are usually people who would have been, poets, historians, biographer, if they could. They have tried their talents at one thing or another and have failed; therefore they turn critic." Samuel Taylor Coleridge
