50 Words For Poe: Automata
“50 Words for Poe: Automata”
Haunted eyes of an automaton
the monkey grinds his music
outside the Magic Theatre
Harry looks on
"For Madmen Only"
He enters of his own volition.
Boxcars he rolls
Double Sixes! the Macabre Maestro
conducts his orchestra
Hermine still sings
A Golden Chrysanthemum
amongst the Black Tulips
She says,
“I’d prefer a glass of milk from an adder
than drink your Mint Julip”
Haunted eyes of an automaton
the monkey grinds his music
Outside the Magic Theatre
Harry looks on
Automaton
to
Automaton
His real name is Gabriel
Snake Eyes, she grins

Devil’s Night
“But we above you ever more residing
In the ether's star translumined ice
Know not day nor night nor time's dividing,
Wear nor age nor sex for our device.
All your sins and anguish self-affrighting,
Your murders and lascivious delighting
Are to us but as a show
Like the suns that circling go,
Changing not our day for night;
On your frenzied life we spy,
And refresh ourselves thereafter
With the stars in order fleeing;
Our breath is winter;
in our sight Fawns the dragon of the sky;
Cool and unchanging is our eternal being,
Cool and star bright is our eternal laughter”

A Little Bit Closer
“Descartes said that animals were automata. I have always been certain that it was the threat of torture that stopped him saying the same held true for human beings. Neither I nor Matthew had time for souls. That we were intricate chemical machines never diminished our sense of wonder, our reverence for Vermeer and for Monet, our floating bodies in the salty water, our evanescent joy before the dying of the light.” Peter Carey, The Chemistry of Tears
