50 Ways to Break a Soul
It all started when I was born in Miami-Dade
I was loving the Florida sun and living in shades
We moved out of Miami, I wish we had stayed
But since then a hefty price was already paid
It all started with this man called “Daddy”
He left me at age 2 and left me a little saddy
Then along came Stepdaddy number one
He wasn’t there long but we had a good run
Then came infamous Stepdaddy number two
Got my mama pregnant and she was almost due
He was always there but he had a loose screw
He shattered my innocence all the way through
If I wasn’t being touched, I was being beaten
Comments on my body, on how I hadn’t eaten
My mother seemed to hate me for no damn reason
She neglected my soul through every single season
Feeling like the black sheep had me on boil
My brother was a golden child, just so spoiled
At age ten I found myself under the soil
Hiding in the deep like some unstruck oil
I wasn’t making any friends at my old school
I was trying to survive, they were trying to be cool
I was trying not to break, they were breaking all the rules
They were living on the surface, I was at the bottom of the pool
Age sixteen was when I wanted to end it all
Cuz at home I was being nailed to the wall
My mom’s hate shrunk me until I felt so small
She’d be right behind me, hoping that I’d fall
She got jealous when she got a new man
Stepdaddy number three was never the plan
He was 23 years old, their love was a sham
Yet he left me all red like strawberry jam
I was confused, thought he was good looking
But I could smell what he was already cooking
He was jealous too from what I have found
He acted all tough when my boyfriend came around
After that mess came Stepdaddy number four?
I started losing count as they walk out the door
But he was an angel, no more keeping score
Cuz he found us and picked us up off the floor
I’m eternally grateful for the man he’s become
It was like a new healing era had begun
All those red flags, yeah he had none
He took all our problems and said “honey it’s done”
Now I’m here trying to make myself feel whole
Trying to take back what all these men stole
I fell in deep but I’m climbing out of the hole
Because I’ve experienced 50 ways to break a soul
