3 Years Apart

It all goes back to high school Where we had a place we could call our own We discovered ourselves there And had our group of friends That longing doesn't go away as we close the door Knowing it will never be the same Yet having high hopes that it will We've found friends to make our spirituality grow We gave our lover over to another The hurt grows strong within us Wanting to love what we left in the world voices telling us it's not that bad Deceiving words try to lure us Being tricked into their customs You don't see it when you're in it But when you go back and look It hurts even more People telling you how much you've changed And how much they missed the old you But you need to remember why you've chosen this path and where it will lead I've gone through these feelings too I hurt just like you It lessens year by year We're on in the same We're just 3 years apart

Change is part of growing up, Corinne. Unfortunately, not all change produces positive results. I miss the way my cousin was before he went to fight in Vietnam. He was like a different person when he returned and we were "just 3 years apart." Awesome poem! Love and best wishes for a happy Fourth of July, Carolyn
