my son was ten when this time began
and we all started measuring our time
with these odd numbers, nine and eleven
a counter-clockwise reversal of time

back toward when we saw an atomic clock
with a minute hand ten from the stroke
of Armageddon and would never let on
that we might swallow that fear to evoke

distrust and hate and let reason abate
from what mothers and grandmothers taught us
to "love one another" is not personally innate
it's easier to slip backward and obsess

about our certain destruction on this eve
a civilized mankind too hard to believe
