Notes About The Poem

15 Hearts

Taped to my desk
are fifteen hearts
on white construction paper
my daughter colored
with full confidence
I’d keep my promise
we’d finish together
next time.

They were to be
flower petals.

That one sheet of
paper, blossoming
innocent love,
has twice saved my life;
provided strength
to fight for her
and keep my promise
when I’d given up.

Because of her,
this humble father,
full of breath, writes;
for matters such -
devices render trite.
