I sip whisky on my patio. It is getting late Your face comes on my social feed, I pause and contemplate Prone to midnight melancholy as I unpack and hold Cherished youthful reveries and thoughts of friends of old I softly touch the screen like our lives once did softly touch and smile at a memory of adoring you so much There was a time when I couldn’t see the sun up in the sky Because of how you shined so very brightly to my eye We called it love, but what did we really know way back when? We were just novice children overwhelmed so way back then. Like playmates with a lucky find, a penny in the street We ran to sweet love’s candy store and bought a precious treat I chuckle when I remember, I thought I was so cool But when you were around me I was a befuddled fool Like a fall of a thousand flowers, you fluttered through my head And I was so intoxicated sneaking to your bed I recall adolescent actions with a twinge of shame when I made you uncomfortable or caused a moment’s pain Teenagers fumbling clumsily, in body and in mind As we sought some facility with love we hoped to find Gentle whispered words of promise made in earnest youth of affection everlasting while praying it was truth It felt like I was dying when you had to move away To someplace I could not travel, ending our lovely play It was all very magical within my boyish mind Glad and painful circumstance so exquisitely combined Near twenty years since I’ve seen you in else but sentiment You live very far away now across the continent It gives me some delight to know we are now distant friends If just by social media in how we made amends I cannot help that little smile when I regard your face Because of recollections of our young lives’ young embrace
