When He Comes
It may be in the evening, When you are sitting home alone, And you have time watching the sun goes down, Sinking slowly over the ocean blue, As the clock ticks loudly on the shelf, You listen to children as they play in the street, Among their thronging footsteps May come the sound of His feet; I tell you, you must watch! When you see the light of the evening stars, Your room is growing dark as the sun goes down, You place the latch on the door of your room, While you begin to bed, with your nightly snooze, He may come. It may be in the midnight hour When it's heavy in the night, And the black of the night lying dumbly in the sky, When the moonless night draws to a close And the lights, you put out in the house, The fire burning low in its place, The clock is ticking loudly by your bed, Yet you sleep tiredly on the couch, Still, you must watch and wait, In your room, for it may be at midnight He will come. You hear the howling of the night, When it's darkly in the sky, And the ocean looks calm and cool, Waiting for the morning of the golden sun Which is drawing near; When the mists are all over the valley, shadowing, The ocean chill, And the morning stars are fading far away Over the sloping hills, Behold, You must watch! The latch is on the door in your room, It is chill before the dawning sun, He may come between night and morning, You must watch and wait. It may be in the morning When the sun is shining bright in the sky, And the morning dew is still glittering over the lawn, When the waves of the ocean are laughing loudly Along the shore, And animals are playing in the land, You are up with the sun, And next-door neighbors come to talk a little, Of all that needs to be done, But you must remember, that He may come, To call you from your busy work, Forevermore. As you are working, your task for the day, You must watch and wait, because He may come. So you are watching every day, When the sun is shining brightly along the way, You rise and say, Surely it's His shining face, Is coming to peer the day, Beyond the ocean breeze, For I know that He is coming soon, It may be morning, night or noon, And when a shadow falls over the windowpane, Where we are working our appointed task, We lift our heads to watch the door, And ask if He is coming soon. And the Spirit of God answers softly In our hearts, "Only a few more shadows shall pass, And He will surely come." Come Lord Jesus Come!
