Stings

 Bare-handed, I hand the combs.
The man in white smiles, bare-handed, Our cheesecloth gauntlets neat and sweet, The throats of our wrists brave lilies.
He and I Have a thousand clean cells between us, Eight combs of yellow cups, And the hive itself a teacup, White with pink flowers on it, With excessive love I enameled it Thinking 'Sweetness, sweetness.
' Brood cells gray as the fossils of shells Terrify me, they seem so old.
What am I buying, wormy mahogany? Is there any queen at all in it? If there is, she is old, Her wings torn shawls, her long body Rubbed of its plush ---- Poor and bare and unqueenly and even shameful.
I stand in a column Of winged, unmiraculous women, Honey-drudgers.
I am no drudge Though for years I have eaten dust And dried plates with my dense hair.
And seen my strangeness evaporate, Blue dew from dangerous skin.
Will they hate me, These women who only scurry, Whose news is the open cherry, the open clover? It is almost over.
I am in control.
Here is my honey-machine, It will work without thinking, Opening, in spring, like an industrious virgin To scour the creaming crests As the moon, for its ivory powders, scours the sea.
A third person is watching.
He has nothing to do with the bee-seller or with me.
Now he is gone In eight great bounds, a great scapegoat.
Here is his slipper, here is another, And here the square of white linen He wore instead of a hat.
He was sweet, The sweat of his efforts a rain Tugging the world to fruit.
The bees found him out, Molding onto his lips like lies, Complicating his features.
They thought death was worth it, but I Have a self to recover, a queen.
Is she dead, is she sleeping? Where has she been, With her lion-red body, her wings of glass? Now she is flying More terrible than she ever was, red Scar in the sky, red comet Over the engine that killed her ---- The mausoleum, the wax house.

Our New Horse

 The boys had come back from the races 
All silent and down on their luck; 
They'd backed 'em, straight out and for places, 
But never a winner they's struck.
They lost their good money on Slogan, And fell most uncommonly flat When Partner, the pride of the Bogan, Was beaten by Aristocrat.
And one said, "I move that instanter We sell out our horses and quit; The brutes ought to win in a canter, Such trials they do when they're fit.
The last one they ran was a snorter -- A gallop to gladden one's heart -- Two-twelve for a mile and a quarter, And finished as straight as a dart.
"And then when I think that they're ready To win me a nice little swag, They are licked like the veriest neddy -- They're licked from the fall of the flag.
The mare held her own to the stable, She died out to nothing at that, And Partner he never seemed able To pace with the Aristocrat.
"And times have been bad, and the seasons Don't promise to be of the best; In short, boys, there's plenty of reasons For giving the racing a rest.
The mare can be kept on the station -- Her breeding is good as can be -- But Partner, his next destination Is rather a trouble to me.
"We can't sell him here, for they know him As well as the clerk of the course; He's raced and won races till, blow him, He's done as a handicap horse.
A jady, uncertain performer, They weight him right out of the hunt, And clap it on warmer and warmer Whenever he gets near the front.
"It's no use to paint him or dot him Or put any fake on his brand, For bushmen are smart, and they'd spot him In any sale-yard in the land.
The folk about here could all tell him, Could swear to each separate hair; Let us send him to Sydney and sell him, There's plenty of Jugginses there.
"We'll call him a maiden, and treat 'em To trials will open their eyes; We'll run their best horses and beat 'em, And then won't they think him a prize.
I pity the fellow that buys him, He'll find in a very short space, No matter how highly he tries him, The beggar won't race in a race.
" * * * * * Next week, under "Seller and Buyer", Appeared in the Daily Gazette: "A racehorse for sale, and a flyer; Has never been started as yet; A trial will show what his pace is; The buyer can get him in light, And win all the handicap races.
Apply before Saturday night.
" He sold for a hundred and thirty, Because of a gallop he had One morning with Bluefish and Bertie.
And donkey-licked both of 'em bad.
And when the old horse had departed, The life on the station grew tame; The race-track was dull and deserted, The boys had gone back on the game.
* * * * * The winter rolled by, and the station Was green with the garland of Spring; A spirit of glad exultation Awoke in each animate thing; And all the old love, the old longing, Broke out in the breasts of the boys -- The visions of racing came thronging With all its delirious joys.
The rushing of floods in their courses, The rattle of rain on the roofs, Recalled the fierce rush of the horses, The thunder of galloping hoofs.
And soon one broke out: "I can suffer No longer the life of a slug; The man that don't race is a duffer, Let's have one more run for the mug.
"Why, everything races, no matter Whatever its method may be: The waterfowl hold a regatta; The possums run heats up a tree; The emus are constantly sprinting A handicap out on the plain; It seems that all nature is hinting 'Tis ime to be at it again.
"The cockatoo parrots are talking Of races to far-away lands; The native companions are walking A go-as-you-please on the sands; The little foals gallop for pastime; The wallabies race down the gap; Let's try it once more for the last time -- Bring out the old jacket and cap.
"And now for a horse; we might try one Of those that are bred on the place.
But I fancy it's better to buy one, A horse that has proved he can race.
Let us send down to Sydney to Skinner, A thorough good judge who can ride, And ask him to buy us a spinner To clean out the whole country-side.
" They wrote him a letter as follows: "we want you to buy us a horse; He must have the speed to catch swallows, And stamina with it, of course.
The price ain't a thing that'll grieve us, It's getting a bad un annoys The undersigned blokes, and believe us, We're yours to a cinder, 'the boys'.
" He answered: "I've bought you a hummer, A horse that has never been raced; I saw him run over the Drummer, He held him outclassed and outpaced.
His breeding's not known, but they state he Is born of a thoroughbred strain.
I've paid them a hundred and eighty, And started the horse in the train.
" They met him -- alas, that these verses Aren't up to their subject's demands, Can't set forth thier eloquent curses -- For Partner was back in their hands.
They went in to meet him with gladness They opened his box with delight -- A silent procession of sadness They crept to the station at night.
And life has grown dull on the station, The boys are all silent and slow; Their work is a daily vexation, And sport is unknown to them now.
Whenever they think how they stranded, They squeal just as guinea-pigs squeal; They'd bit their own hook, and were landed With fifty pounds loss on the deal.

In The New Sun

 Filaments of light 
slant like windswept rain.
The orange seller hawks into the sky, a man with a hat stops below my window and shakes his tassels.
Awake in Tetuan, the room filling with the first colors, and water running in a tub.
* A row of sparkling carp iced in the new sun, odor of first love, of childhood, the fingers held to the nose, or hours while the clock hummed.
The fat woman in the orange smock places tiny greens at mouth and tail as though she remembered or yearned instead for forests, deep floors of needles, and the hushed breath.
* Blue nosed cannisters as fat as barrels silently slipping by.
"Nitro," he says.
On the roof he shows me where Reuban lay down to ****-off and never woke.
"We're takin little whiffs all the time.
" Slivers of glass work their way through the canvas gloves and burn.
Lifting my black glasses in the chemical light, I stop to squeeze one out and the asbestos glows like a hand in moonlight or a face in dreams.
* Pinpoints of blue along the arms, light rushing down across the breasts missing the dry shadows under them.
She stretches and rises on her knees and smiles and far down to the sudden embroidery of curls the belly smiles that three times stretched slowly moonward in a hill of child.
* Sun through the cracked glass, bartender at the cave end peeling a hard-boiled egg.
Four in the afternoon, the dogs asleep, the river must bridge seven parched flats to Cordoba by nightfall.
It will never make it.
I will never make it.
Like the old man in gray corduroy asleep under the stifled fan, I have no more moves, stranded on an empty board.
* From the high hill behind Ford Rouge, we could see the ore boats pulling down river, the rail yards, and the smoking mountain.
East, the city spreading toward St.
Clair, miles of houses, factories, shops burning in the still white snow.
"Share this with your brother," he said, and it was always winter and a dark snow.

The Pencil Seller

 A pencil, sir; a penny -- won't you buy?
I'm cold and wet and tired, a sorry plight;
Don't turn your back, sir; take one just to try;
I haven't made a single sale to-night.
Oh, thank you, sir; but take the pencil too; I'm not a beggar, I'm a business man.
Pencils I deal in, red and black and blue; It's hard, but still I do the best I can.
Most days I make enough to pay for bread, A cup o' coffee, stretching room at night.
One needs so little -- to be warm and fed, A hole to kennel in -- oh, one's all right .

Excuse me, you're a painter, are you not? I saw you looking at that dealer's show, The croûtes he has for sale, a shabby lot -- What do I know of Art? What do I know .

Well, look! That David Strong so well displayed, "White Sorcery" it's called, all gossamer, And pale moon-magic and a dancing maid (You like the little elfin face of her?) -- That's good; but still, the picture as a whole, The values, -- Pah! He never painted worse; Perhaps because his fire was lacking coal, His cupboard bare, no money in his purse.

they say he labored hard and long, And see now, in the harvest of his fame, When round his pictures people gape and throng, A scurvy dealer sells this on his name.
A wretched rag, wrung out of want and woe; A soulless daub, not David Strong a bit, Unworthy of his art.

The doctor looked at her; he shook his head, And spoke of wine and grapes and Southern air: "If you can get her out of this," he said, "She'll have a fighting chance with proper care.
" "With proper care!" When he had gone away, I sat there, trembling, twitching, dazed with grief.
Under my old and ragged coat she lay, Our room was bare and cold beyond belief.
"Maybe," I thought, "I still can paint a bit, Some lilies, landscape, anything at all.
" Alas! My brush, I could not steady it.
Down from my fumbling hand I let it fall.
"With proper care" -- how could I give her that, Half of me dead? .

I crawled down to the street.
Cowering beside the wall, I held my hat And begged of every one I chanced to meet.
I got some pennies, bought her milk and bread, And so I fought to keep the Doom away; And yet I saw with agony of dread My dear one sinking, sinking day by day.
And then I was awakened in the night: "Please take my hands, I'm cold," I heard her sigh; And soft she whispered, as she held me tight: "Oh daddy, we've been happy, you and I!" I do not think she suffered any pain, She breathed so quietly .

but though I tried, I could not warm her little hands again: And so there in the icy dark she died.

The dawn came groping in with fingers gray And touched me, sitting silent as a stone; I kissed those piteous lips, as cold as clay -- I did not cry, I did not even moan.
At last I rose, groped down the narrow stair; An evil fog was oozing from the sky; Half-crazed I stumbled on, I knew not where, Like phantoms were the folks that passed me by.
How long I wandered thus I do not know, But suddenly I halted, stood stock-still -- Beside a door that spilled a golden glow I saw a name, my name, upon a bill.
"A Sale of Famous Pictures," so it read, "A Notable Collection, each a gem, Distinguished Works of Art by painters dead.
" The folks were going in, I followed them.
I stood upon the outskirts of the crowd, I only hoped that none might notice me.
Soon, soon I heard them call my name aloud: "A `David Strong', his Fete in Brittany.
" (A brave big picture that, the best I've done, It glowed and kindled half the hall away, With all its memories of sea and sun, Of pipe and bowl, of joyous work and play.
I saw the sardine nets blue as the sky, I saw the nut-brown fisher-boats put out.
) "Five hundred pounds!" rapped out a voice near by; "Six hundred!" "Seven!" "Eight!" And then a shout: "A thousand pounds!" Oh, how I thrilled to hear! Oh, how the bids went up by leaps, by bounds! And then a silence; then the auctioneer: "It's going! Going! Gone! Three thousand pounds!" Three thousand pounds! A frenzy leapt in me.
"That picture's mine," I cried; "I'm David Strong.
I painted it, this famished wretch you see; I did it, I, and sold it for a song.
And in a garret three small hours ago My daughter died for want of Christian care.
Look, look at me! .

Sighs of Autumn Rain (2)

Continuous wind long rain autumn numerous and confused
Four seas eight wastes together one cloud
Go horse come ox no longer distinguish
Muddy Jing clear Wei how now distinguish
Grain head grow ear millet ear black
Farmer field wife without news
City in ten litres rice exchange quilt silk
Agree better consider both mutual worth


Ceaseless wind and lengthy rain swirl together this autumn,
The four seas and eight deserts are covered by one cloud.
A horse going, an ox coming, cannot be distinguished,
How now can the muddy Jing and clear Wei be told apart?
The standing grain begins to sprout, the millet's ears turn black,
Farmers and the farmers' wives have no hopeful news.
In the city, a bucket of rice can cost a silken quilt,
And both the buyer and seller have to agree the bargain is fair.

 Poems do not always satisfy the soul,

The feel of cobbles underfoot is at this moment more

Than all of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the unending vistas

Of the moor, an infinity of purity that excels even Mallarm?.
I sit on the cracked steps to the church, sipping tea With my eye on the Black Bull where Bramwell worshipped Until a mobile phone playing ‘The Bluebells of Scotland’ Disturbs my reverie and I notice the Big Issue seller Can find no takers among the ernest camera-ready Japanese And mid-life couple shuffling into tea rooms.
"We are here to please" I long for the enduring love of a woman Here is God’s glory-hole, O, women, why are you all so angry?

A youth went faring up and down,
