Writing To Onegin

 (After Pushkin) 
Look at the bare wood hand-waxed floor and long 
White dressing-gown, the good child's writing-desk 
And passionate cold feet
Summoning music of the night - tumbrils, gongs
And gamelans - with one neat pen, one candle
Puttering its life out hour by hour. 
Is "Tell Him I love him" never a good idea? You can't wish this
Unlived - this world on fire, on storm 
Alert, till the shepherd's song 
Outside, some hyper-active yellowhammer, bulbul,
Wren, amplified in hills and woods, tell her to bestow 
A spot of notice on the dawn.

I meant to keep it quiet. You'd never have known, if -
I wish - I could have seen you once a week. To mull over, day

To me.) Who couldn't give a toss for domestic peace - 
Only for celebrity and showing off -

The pink wax seal. Outside, a milk mist clears
From the shimmering valley. If I were her guardian
Angel, I'd divide myself. One half would holler
Don't! Stay on an even keel! Don't dollop over
All you are, to a man who'll go to town 
On his next little fling. If he's entranced today 
By the way you finger your silk throat inside your collar,
Tomorrow there'll be Olga, Sally, Jane. But then I'd whisper
Go for it, petal. Nothing's as real as what you write.
His funeral, if he's not up to it. What we feel
Is mortal, and won't come again.

The old, rude bushes she has hide-and-seeked in all

The odd gog into their mouths. No one could spy
Her here, not even the sun in its burn-time. Her cheeks 
Are simmering fire.
We're talking iridescence, a Red Admiral's last tremble
Before the avid schoolboy plunks his net.

The Chinese teapot, sending coils of Lapsang Suchong
Floating to the ceiling in the shadows, tracing O and E 
In the window's black reflection, one finger 
Tendrilling her own breath on the glass. 
Like putting a shell to your ear to hear the sea

When it's really your own red little sparkle, the echo 
Of marching blood. She's asking a phantom 
World of pearled-up mist for proof
That her man exists: that gamelans and tumbrils
Won't evade her. But now, among 
The kitchen garden's rose-haws, mallow, Pernod- 
Coloured pears, she unhooks herself thorn by thorn 
For the exit aria. For fade-out. Suddenly there he is
In the avenue, the man she's written to - Charon
Gazing at her with blazing eyes! Darth Vader
From Star Wars. She's trapped, in a house she didn't realize
Was burning. Her letter was a gate to the inferno.

Ode on Adversity

 WHERE o'er my head, the deaf'ning Tempest blew, 
And Night's cold lamp cast forth a feeble ray; 
Where o'er the woodlands, vivid light'nings flew, 
Cleft the strong oak, and scorch'd the blossom'd spray; 
At morn's approach, I mark the sun's warm glow 
O'er the grey hill a crimson radiance throw; 
I mark the silv'ry fragrant dew, 
Give lustre to the vi'let's hue; 
The shallow rivers o'er their pebbly way, 
In slow meanders murmuring play; 
Day spreads her beams, the lofty forest tree, 
Shakes from its moisten'd head the pearly show'r, 
All nature, feels the renovating hour, 
All, but the sorrowing child of cold ADVERSITY; 
For her, the linnet's downy throat 
Breathes harmony in vain; 
Unmov'd, she hears the warbling note 
In all the melody of song complain; 
By her unmark'd the flowret's bloom, 
In vain the landscape sheds perfume; 
Her languid form, on earth's damp bed, 
In coarse and tatter'd garb reclines; 
In silent agony she pines; 
Or, if she hears some stranger's tread, 
To a dark nook, ashamed she flies, 
And with her scanty robe, o'er-shades her weeping eyes. 

Her hair, dishevel'd, wildly plays 
With every freezing gale; 
While down her cold cheek, deadly pale, 
The tear of pensive sorrow strays; 
She shuns, the PITY of the proud, 
Her mind, still triumphs, unsubdu'd 
Nor stoops, its misery to obtrude, 
Upon the vulgar croud. 

Unheeded, and unknown, 
To some bleak wilderness she flies; 
And seated on a moss-clad stone, 
Unwholesome vapours round her rise, 
And hang their mischiefs on her brow; 
The ruffian winds, her limbs expose; 
Still, still, her heart disdains to bow, 
She cherishes her woes. 

NOW FAMINE spreads her sable wings; 
INGRATITUDE insults her pangs; 
While from a thousand eager fangs, 
Madd'ning she flies;­The recreant crew 
With taunting smiles her steps pursue; 
While on her burning, bleeding heart, 
Fresh wounded by Affliction's dart, 
NEGLECT, her icy poison flings; 
From HOPE's celestial bosom hurl'd,

Rivers of Canada

 O all the little rivers that run to Hudson's Bay,
They call me and call me to follow them away.
Missinaibi, Abitibi, Little Current--where they run
Dancing and sparkling I see them in the sun.
I hear the brawling rapid, the thunder of the fall,
And when I think upon them I cannot stay at all.
At the far end of the carry, where the wilderness begins,
Set me down with my canoe-load--and forgiveness of my sins.
O all the mighty rivers beneath the Polar Star,
They call me and call me to follow them afar.

Peace and Athabasca and Coppermine and Slave,
And Yukon and Mackenzie--the highroads of the brave.

Saskatchewan, Assiniboine, the Bow and the Qu'Appelle,
And many a prairie river whose name is like a spell.

They rumor through the twilight at the edge of the unknown,
"There's a message waiting for you, and a kingdom all your own.

"The wilderness shall feed you, her gleam shall be your guide.
Come out from desolations, our path of hope is wide."

O all the headlong rivers that hurry to the West,
They call me and lure me with the joy of their unrest.

Columbia and Fraser and Bear and Kootenay,
I love their fearless reaches where winds untarnished play--

The rush of glacial water across the pebbly bar
To polished pools of azure where the hidden boulders are.

Just there, with heaven smiling, any morning I would be,
Where all the silver rivers go racing to the sea.

O well remembered rivers that sing of long ago,
Ajourneying through summer or dreaming under snow.

Among their meadow islands through placid days they glide,
And where the peaceful orchards are diked against the tide.

Tobique and Madawaska and shining Gaspereaux,
St. Croix and Nashwaak and St. John whose haunts I used to know.

And all the pleasant rivers that seek the Fundy foam,
They call me and call me to follow them home.

 Come round me, little childer;

Inscription for the Entrance to a Wood

 Stranger, if thou hast learned a truth which needs 
No school of long experience, that the world 
Is full of guilt and misery, and hast seen 
Enough of all its sorrows, crimes, and cares, 
To tire thee of it, enter this wild wood 
And view the haunts of nature. The calm shade 
Shall bring a kindred calm, and the sweet breeze 
That makes the green leaves dance, shall waft a balm 
To thy sick heart. Thou wilt find nothing here 
Of all that pained thee in the haunts of men, 
And made thee loathe thy life. The primal curse 
Fell, it is true, upon the unsinning earth, 
But not in vengance. God hath yoked to guilt

Are still the abode of gladness; the thick roof

The Strange Lady

 The summer morn is bright and fresh, the birds are darting by, 
As if they loved to breast the breeze that sweeps the cool dear sky; 
Young Albert, in the forest's edge, has heard a rustling sound 
An arrow slightly strikes his hand and falls upon the ground. 

A lovely woman from the wood comes suddenly in sight; 
Her merry eye is full and black, her cheek is brown and bright; 
She wears a tunic of the blue, her belt with beads is strung, 
And yet she speaks in gentle tones, and in the English tongue. 

"It was an idle bolt I sent, against the villain crow; 
Fair sir, I fear it harmed thy hand; beshrew my erring bow!" 
"Ah! would that bolt had not been spent, then, lady, might I wear 
A lasting token on my hand of one so passing fair!" 

"Thou art a flatterer like the rest, but wouldst thou take with me 
A day of hunting in the wilds, beneath the greenwood tree, 
I know where most the pheasants feed, and where the red-deer herd, 
And thou shouldst chase the nobler game, and I bring down the bird." 

Now Albert in her quiver lays the arrow in its place, 
And wonders as he gazes on the beauty of her face: 
`Those hunting-grounds are far away, and, lady, 'twere not meet 
That night, amid the wilderness, should overtake thy feet." 

"Heed not the night, a summer lodge amid the wild is mine, 
'Tis shadowed by the tulip-tree, 'tis mantled by the vine; 
The wild plum sheds its yellow fruit from fragrant thickets nigh,

Next day, within a mossy glen, mid mouldering trunks were found 
The fragments of a human form, upon the bloody ground; 
White bones from which the flesh was torn, and locks of glossy hair; 
They laid them in the place of graves, yet wist not whose they were. 
And whether famished evening wolves had mangled Albert so, 
Or that strange dame so gay and fair were some mysterious foe, 
Or whether to that forest lodge, beyond the mountains blue, 
He went to dwell with her, the friends who mourned him never knew.

 Thrice, and above, blest, my soul's half, art thou,
In thy both last and better vow;
Could'st leave the city, for exchange, to see
The country's sweet simplicity;
And it to know and practise, with intent
To grow the sooner innocent;
By studying to know virtue, and to aim
More at her nature than her name;
The last is but the least; the first doth tell
Ways less to live, than to live well:--
And both are known to thee, who now canst live
Led by thy conscience, to give

How Good Are The Poor

 'Tis night—within the close stout cabin door, 
 The room is wrapped in shade save where there fall 
 Some twilight rays that creep along the floor, 
 And show the fisher's nets upon the wall. 
 
 In the dim corner, from the oaken chest, 
 A few white dishes glimmer; through the shade 
 Stands a tall bed with dusky curtains dressed, 
 And a rough mattress at its side is laid. 
 
 Five children on the long low mattress lie— 
 A nest of little souls, it heaves with dreams; 
 In the high chimney the last embers die, 
 And redden the dark room with crimson gleams. 
 
 The mother kneels and thinks, and pale with fear, 
 She prays alone, hearing the billows shout: 
 While to wild winds, to rocks, to midnight drear, 
 The ominous old ocean sobs without. 
 
 Poor wives of fishers! Ah! 'tis sad to say, 
 Our sons, our husbands, all that we love best, 
 Our hearts, our souls, are on those waves away,

 To give him aid. "Were they but old, they might." 
 Ah, mother! when they too are on the main, 
 How wilt thou weep: "Would they were young again!" 
 
 She takes his lantern—'tis his hour at last 
 She will go forth, and see if the day breaks, 
 And if his signal-fire be at the mast; 
 Ah, no—not yet—no breath of morning wakes. 
 
 No line of light o'er the dark water lies; 
 It rains, it rains, how black is rain at morn: 
 The day comes trembling, and the young dawn cries— 
 Cries like a baby fearing to be born. 
 
 Sudden her humane eyes that peer and watch 
 Through the deep shade, a mouldering dwelling find, 
 No light within—the thin door shakes—the thatch 
 O'er the green walls is twisted of the wind, 
 
 Yellow, and dirty, as a swollen rill, 
 "Ah, me," she saith, "here does that widow dwell; 
 Few days ago my good man left her ill: 
 I will go in and see if all be well." 
 
 She strikes the door, she listens, none replies, 
 And Janet shudders. "Husbandless, alone, 
 And with two children—they have scant supplies. 
 Good neighbor! She sleeps heavy as a stone." 
 
 She calls again, she knocks, 'tis silence still; 
 No sound—no answer—suddenly the door, 
 As if the senseless creature felt some thrill 
 Of pity, turned—and open lay before. 
 
 She entered, and her lantern lighted all 
 The house so still, but for the rude waves' din. 
 Through the thin roof the plashing rain-drops fall, 
 But something terrible is couched within.
