Heritage

 What is Africa to me:
Copper sun or scarlet sea,
Jungle star or jungle track,
Strong bronzed men, or regal black
Women from whose loins I sprang
When the birds of Eden sang?
One three centuries removed
From the scenes his fathers loved,
Spicy grove, cinnamon tree,
What is Africa to me?

So I lie, who all day long
Want no sound except the song
Sung by wild barbaric birds
Goading massive jungle herds,
Juggernauts of flesh that pass
Trampling tall defiant grass
Where young forest lovers lie,
Plighting troth beneath the sky.
So I lie, who always hear, Though I cram against my ear Both my thumbs, and keep them there, Great drums throbbing through the air.
So I lie, whose fount of pride, Dear distress, and joy allied, Is my somber flesh and skin, With the dark blood dammed within Like great pulsing tides of wine That, I fear, must burst the fine Channels of the chafing net Where they surge and foam and fret.

In The Gold Room - A Harmony

 Her ivory hands on the ivory keys
Strayed in a fitful fantasy,
Like the silver gleam when the poplar trees
Rustle their pale-leaves listlessly,
Or the drifting foam of a restless sea
When the waves show their teeth in the flying breeze.
Her gold hair fell on the wall of gold Like the delicate gossamer tangles spun On the burnished disk of the marigold, Or the sunflower turning to meet the sun When the gloom of the dark blue night is done, And the spear of the lily is aureoled.
And her sweet red lips on these lips of mine Burned like the ruby fire set In the swinging lamp of a crimson shrine, Or the bleeding wounds of the pomegranate, Or the heart of the lotus drenched and wet With the spilt-out blood of the rose-red wine.

Centenarian's Story The

 GIVE me your hand, old Revolutionary; 
The hill-top is nigh—but a few steps, (make room, gentlemen;) 
Up the path you have follow’d me well, spite of your hundred and extra years; 
You can walk, old man, though your eyes are almost done; 
Your faculties serve you, and presently I must have them serve me.
Rest, while I tell what the crowd around us means; On the plain below, recruits are drilling and exercising; There is the camp—one regiment departs to-morrow; Do you hear the officers giving the orders? Do you hear the clank of the muskets? Why, what comes over you now, old man? Why do you tremble, and clutch my hand so convulsively? The troops are but drilling—they are yet surrounded with smiles; Around them, at hand, the well-drest friends, and the women; While splendid and warm the afternoon sun shines down; Green the midsummer verdure, and fresh blows the dallying breeze, O’er proud and peaceful cities, and arm of the sea between.
But drill and parade are over—they march back to quarters; Only hear that approval of hands! hear what a clapping! As wending, the crowds now part and disperse—but we, old man, Not for nothing have I brought you hither—we must remain; You to speak in your turn, and I to listen and tell.
THE CENTENARIAN.
When I clutch’d your hand, it was not with terror; But suddenly, pouring about me here, on every side, And below there where the boys were drilling, and up the slopes they ran, And where tents are pitch’d, and wherever you see, south and south-east and south-west, Over hills, across lowlands, and in the skirts of woods, And along the shores, in mire (now fill’d over), came again, and suddenly raged, As eighty-five years agone, no mere parade receiv’d with applause of friends, But a battle, which I took part in myself—aye, long ago as it is, I took part in it, Walking then this hill-top, this same ground.
Aye, this is the ground; My blind eyes, even as I speak, behold it re-peopled from graves; The years recede, pavements and stately houses disappear; Rude forts appear again, the old hoop’d guns are mounted; I see the lines of rais’d earth stretching from river to bay; I mark the vista of waters, I mark the uplands and slopes: Here we lay encamp’d—it was this time in summer also.
As I talk, I remember all—I remember the Declaration; It was read here—the whole army paraded—it was read to us here; By his staff surrounded, the General stood in the middle—he held up his unsheath’d sword, It glitter’d in the sun in full sight of the army.
’Twas a bold act then; The English war-ships had just arrived—the king had sent them from over the sea; We could watch down the lower bay where they lay at anchor, And the transports, swarming with soldiers.
A few days more, and they landed—and then the battle.
Twenty thousand were brought against us, A veteran force, furnish’d with good artillery.
I tell not now the whole of the battle; But one brigade, early in the forenoon, order’d forward to engage the red-coats; Of that brigade I tell, and how steadily it march’d, And how long and how well it stood, confronting death.
Who do you think that was, marching steadily, sternly confronting death? It was the brigade of the youngest men, two thousand strong, Rais’d in Virginia and Maryland, and many of them known personally to the General.
Jauntily forward they went with quick step toward Gowanus’ waters; Till of a sudden, unlook’d for, by defiles through the woods, gain’d at night, The British advancing, wedging in from the east, fiercely playing their guns, That brigade of the youngest was cut off, and at the enemy’s mercy.
The General watch’d them from this hill; They made repeated desperate attempts to burst their environment; Then drew close together, very compact, their flag flying in the middle; But O from the hills how the cannon were thinning and thinning them! It sickens me yet, that slaughter! I saw the moisture gather in drops on the face of the General; I saw how he wrung his hands in anguish.
Meanwhile the British maneuver’d to draw us out for a pitch’d battle; But we dared not trust the chances of a pitch’d battle.
We fought the fight in detachments; Sallying forth, we fought at several points—but in each the luck was against us; Our foe advancing, steadily getting the best of it, push’d us back to the works on this hill; Till we turn’d, menacing, here, and then he left us.
That was the going out of the brigade of the youngest men, two thousand strong; Few return’d—nearly all remain in Brooklyn.
That, and here, my General’s first battle; No women looking on, nor sunshine to bask in—it did not conclude with applause; Nobody clapp’d hands here then.
But in darkness, in mist, on the ground, under a chill rain, Wearied that night we lay, foil’d and sullen; While scornfully laugh’d many an arrogant lord, off against us encamp’d, Quite within hearing, feasting, klinking wine-glasses together over their victory.
So, dull and damp, and another day; But the night of that, mist lifting, rain ceasing, Silent as a ghost, while they thought they were sure of him, my General retreated.
I saw him at the river-side, Down by the ferry, lit by torches, hastening the embarcation; My General waited till the soldiers and wounded were all pass’d over; And then, (it was just ere sunrise,) these eyes rested on him for the last time.
Every one else seem’d fill’d with gloom; Many no doubt thought of capitulation.
But when my General pass’d me, As he stood in his boat, and look’d toward the coming sun, I saw something different from capitulation.
TERMINUS.
Enough—the Centenarian’s story ends; The two, the past and present, have interchanged; I myself, as connecter, as chansonnier of a great future, am now speaking.
And is this the ground Washington trod? And these waters I listlessly daily cross, are these the waters he cross’d, As resolute in defeat, as other generals in their proudest triumphs? It is well—a lesson like that, always comes good; I must copy the story, and send it eastward and westward; I must preserve that look, as it beam’d on you, rivers of Brooklyn.
See! as the annual round returns, the phantoms return; It is the 27th of August, and the British have landed; The battle begins, and goes against us—behold! through the smoke, Washington’s face; The brigade of Virginia and Maryland have march’d forth to intercept the enemy; They are cut off—murderous artillery from the hills plays upon them; Rank after rank falls, while over them silently droops the flag, Baptized that day in many a young man’s bloody wounds, In death, defeat, and sisters’, mothers’ tears.
Ah, hills and slopes of Brooklyn! I perceive you are more valuable than your owners supposed; Ah, river! henceforth you will be illumin’d to me at sunrise with something besides the sun.
Encampments new! in the midst of you stands an encampment very old; Stands forever the camp of the dead brigade.

The Unpromised Land Montgomery Alabama

 Despite the noon sun shimmering on Court Street,
each day I leave my desk, and window-shop,
waste time, and use my whole lunch hour to stroll
the route the marchers took.
The walk is blistering-- the kind of heat that might make you recall Nat Turner skinned and rendered into grease if you share my cheap liberal guilt for sins before your time.
I hold it dear.
I know if I had lived in 1861 I would have fought in butternut, not blue and never known I'd sinned.
Nat Turner skinned for doing what I like to think I'd do if I were him.
Before the war half-naked coffles were paraded to Court Square, where Mary Chesnut gasped--"seasick"--to see a bright mulatto on the auction block, who bantered with the buyers, sang bawdy songs, and flaunted her green satin dress, smart shoes, I'm sure the poor thing knew who'd purchase her, wrote Mrs.
Chestnut, who plopped on a stool to discipline her thoughts.
Today I saw, in that same square, three black girls pick loose tar, flick it at one another's new white dresses, then squeal with laughter.
Three girls about that age of those blown up in church in Birmingham.
The legendary buses rumble past the church where Reverend King preached when he lived in town, a town somehow more his than mine, despite my memory of standing on Dexter Avenue and watching, fascinated, a black man fry six eggs on his Dodge Dart.
Because I watched he gave me one with flecks of dark blue paint stuck on the yolk.
My mother slapped my hand.
I dropped the egg.
And when I tried to say I'm sorry, Mother grabbed my wrist and marched me back to our car.
I can't hold to the present.
I've known these streets, their history, too long.
Two months before she died, my grandmother remembered when I'd sassed her as a child, and at the dinner table, in midbite, leaned over, struck the grown man on the mouth.
And if I hadn't said I'm sorry,fast, she would have gone for me again.
My aunt, from laughing, choked on a piece of lemon pie.
But I'm not sure.
I'm just Christian enough to think each sin taints every one of us, a harsh philosophy that doesn't seem to get me very far--just to the Capitol each day at noon, my wet shirt clinging to my back.
Atop its pole, the stars-and-bars, too heavy for the breeze, hangs listlessly.
Once, standing where Jeff Davis took his oath, I saw the Capitol.
He shrank into his chair, so flaccid with paralysis he looked like melting flesh, white as a maggot.
He's fatter now.
He courts black votes, and life is calmer than when Muslims shot whites on this street, and calmer than when the Klan blew up Judge Johnson's house or Martin Luther King's.
My history could be worse.
I could be Birmingham.
I could be Selma.
I could be Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Instead, I'm this small river town.
Today, as I worked at my desk, the boss called the janitor, Jerome, I hear you get some lunchtime pussy every day.
Jerome, toothless and over seventy, stuck the broom handle out between his legs: Yessir! When the Big Hog talks --he waggled his broomstick--I gots to listen.
He laughed.
And from the corner of his eye, he looked to see if we were laughing too.

Orlie Wilde

 A goddess, with a siren's grace,--
A sun-haired girl on a craggy place
Above a bay where fish-boats lay
Drifting about like birds of prey.
Wrought was she of a painter's dream,-- Wise only as are artists wise, My artist-friend, Rolf Herschkelhiem, With deep sad eyes of oversize, And face of melancholy guise.
I pressed him that he tell to me This masterpiece's history.
He turned--REturned--and thus beguiled Me with the tale of Orlie Wilde:-- "We artists live ideally: We breed our firmest facts of air; We make our own reality-- We dream a thing and it is so.
The fairest scenes we ever see Are mirages of memory; The sweetest thoughts we ever know We plagiarize from Long Ago: And as the girl on canvas there Is marvelously rare and fair, 'Tis only inasmuch as she Is dumb and may not speak to me!" He tapped me with his mahlstick--then The picture,--and went on again: "Orlie Wilde, the fisher's child-- I see her yet, as fair and mild As ever nursling summer day Dreamed on the bosom of the bay: For I was twenty then, and went Alone and long-haired--all content With promises of sounding name And fantasies of future fame, And thoughts that now my mind discards As editor a fledgling bard's.
"At evening once I chanced to go, With pencil and portfolio, Adown the street of silver sand That winds beneath this craggy land, To make a sketch of some old scurf Of driftage, nosing through the surf A splintered mast, with knarl and strand Of rigging-rope and tattered threads Of flag and streamer and of sail That fluttered idly in the gale Or whipped themselves to sadder shreds.
The while I wrought, half listlessly, On my dismantled subject, came A sea-bird, settling on the same With plaintive moan, as though that he Had lost his mate upon the sea; And--with my melancholy trend-- It brought dim dreams half understood-- It wrought upon my morbid mood,-- I thought of my own voyagings That had no end--that have no end.
-- And, like the sea-bird, I made moan That I was loveless and alone.
And when at last with weary wings It went upon its wanderings, With upturned face I watched its flight Until this picture met my sight: A goddess, with a siren's grace,-- A sun-haired girl on a craggy place Above a bay where fish-boats lay Drifting about like birds of prey.

All curious I, pausing, tried To fancy what it all implied,-- When suddenly I found my feet Were wet; and, underneath the seat On which I sat, I heard the sound Of gurgling waters, and I found The boat aleak alarmingly.

My Mother

 I 

Reg wished me to go with him to the field, 
I paused because I did not want to go; 
But in her quiet way she made me yield 
Reluctantly, for she was breathing low.
Her hand she slowly lifted from her lap And, smiling sadly in the old sweet way, She pointed to the nail where hung my cap.
Her eyes said: I shall last another day.
But scarcely had we reached the distant place, When o'er the hills we heard a faint bell ringing; A boy came running up with frightened face; We knew the fatal news that he was bringing.
I heard him listlessly, without a moan, Although the only one I loved was gone.
II The dawn departs, the morning is begun, The trades come whispering from off the seas, The fields of corn are golden in the sun, The dark-brown tassels fluttering in the breeze; The bell is sounding and the children pass, Frog-leaping, skipping, shouting, laughing shrill, Down the red road, over the pasture-grass, Up to the school-house crumbling on the hill.
The older folk are at their peaceful toil, Some pulling up the weeds, some plucking corn, And others breaking up the sun-baked soil.
Float, faintly-scented breeze, at early morn Over the earth where mortals sow and reap-- Beneath its breast my mother lies asleep.
