WE ARE SEVEN

  A simple child, dear brother Jim,

A Girls Garden

 A NEIGHBOR of mine in the village
 Likes to tell how one spring
When she was a girl on the farm, she did

One day she asked her father To give her a garden plot To plant and tend and reap herself, And he said, "Why not?" In casting about for a corner He thought of an idle bit Of walled-off ground where a shop had stood, And he said, "Just it.

A Tale of the Sea

 A pathetic tale of the sea I will unfold,
Enough to make one's blood run cold;
Concerning four fishermen cast adrift in a dory.
As I've been told I'll relate the story.
T'was on the 8th April on the afternoon of that day That the village of Louisburg was thrown into a wild state or dismay, And the villagers flew to the beach in a state of wild uproar And in a dory they found four men were cast ashore.
Then the villagers, in surprise assembled about the dory, And they found that the bottom of the boat was gory; Then their hearts were seized with sudden dread, when they discovered that two of the men were dead.
And the two survivors were exhausted from exposure, hunger, and cold, Which used the spectators to shudder when them they did behold; And with hunger the poor men couldn't stand on their feet, They felt so weakly on their legs for want of meat.
They were carried to a boarding-house without delay, But those that were looking on were stricken with dismay, When the remains of James and Angus McDonald were found in the boat, Likewise three pieces or flesh in a pool or blood afloat.
Angus McDonald's right arm was missing from the elbow, and the throat was cut in a sickening manner which filled the villagers hearts with woe, Especially when they saw two pieces of flesh had been cut from each thigh, 'Twas then the kind-hearted villagers did murmur and sigh.
Angus McDonald must have felt the pangs of hunger before he did try to cut two pieces of fiesh from James McDonald's thigh, But, Oh heaven! the pangs of hunger are very hard to thole, And anything that's eatable is precious unto an hungry soul.
Alas it is most pitiful and horrible to think That with hunger christians will each other's blood drink And eat each other's flesh to save themselves from starvation; But the pangs or hunger makes them mad, and drives them to desperation.
An old American soldier that had passed through the Civil War, Declared the scene surpassed anything he's seen by far, And at the sight, the crowd in horror turned away, which no doubt they will remember for many a day.
Colin Chisholm, one of the survivors was looking very pale, Stretched on a sofa at the boarding-house, making his wail: Poor fellow! his feet was greatly swollen, and with a melancholy air, He gave the following account of the distressing affair: We belonged to the American fishing schooner named "Cicely", And our captain was a brave man, called McKenzie; And the vessel had fourteen hands altogether And during the passage we had favourable weather.
'Twas on March the 17th we sailed from Gloucester on the Wednesday And all our hearts felt buoyant and gay; And we arrived on the Western banks on the succeeding Tuesday, While the time unto us seemed to pass merrily away.
About eight O'clock in the morning, we left the vessel in a dory, And I hope all kind christians will take heed to my story; Well, while we were at our work, the sky began to frown, And with a dense fog we were suddenly shut down Then we hunted and shouted, and every nerve did strain, Thinking to find our schooner but, alas! it was all in vain: Because the thick fog hid the vessel from our view, And to keep ourselves warm we closely to each other drew.
We had not one drop of water , nor provisions of any kind, Which, alas soon began to tell on our mind; Especially upon James McDonald who was very thinly clad, And with the cold and hunger he felt almost mad.
And looking from the stern where he was lying, he said Good bye, mates, Oh! I am dying! Poor fellow we kept his body thinking the rest of us would be saved, Then, with hunger, Angus McDonald began to cry and madly raved.
And he cried, Oh, God! send us some kind of meat, Because I'm resolved to have something to eat; Oh! do not let us starve on the briny flood Or else I will drink of poor Jim's blood.
Then he suddenly seized his knife and cut off poor Jim's arm, Not thinking in his madness he'd done any harm; Then poor Jim's blood he did drink and his flesh did eat, Declaring that the blood tasted like cream, and was a treat.
Then he asked me to taste it, saying It was good without doubt, Then I tasted it, but in disgust I instantly spat it out; Saying, if I was to die within an hour on the briny flood, I would neither eat the flesh nor drink the blood.
Then in the afternoon again he turned to me, Saying, I'm going to cut Jim's throat for more blood d'ye see; Then I begged of him, for God's sake not to cut the throat of poor Jim, But he cried, Ha! ha! to save my own life I consider it no sin.
I tried to prevent him but he struck me without dismay And cut poor Jim's throat in defiance of me, or all I could say, Also a piece of flesh from each thigh, and began to eat away, But poor fellow he sickened about noon, and died on the Sunday.
Now it is all over and I will thank all my life, Who has preserved me and my mate, McEachern, in the midst of danger and strife; And I hope that all landsmen of low and high degree, Will think of the hardships of poor mariners while at sea.

Jabed Meeker Humorist

 Twain? Oh, yes, I’ve heard Mark Twain
Heard him down to Pleasant Plain;
Funny? Yes, I guess so.
Folks Seemed to laugh loud at his jokes— Laughed to beat the band; but I Couldn’t rightly make out why.
Guess his humor ain’t refined.
Quite enough to suit my mind.
Mark’s all right—right clever speaker— But he can’t touch Jabed Meeker; And one thing that makes it ***** Is that Jabed lives right here.
You ain’t met him? Son, you’ve missed The most funniest humorist I’ve met with in my born days— Funniest talker, anyways, When it comes to repartee— That’s the humor catches me! Like a specimen? Huh! Well, Take, for instance, his umbrell; Wouldn’t think, until he spoke, He could turn that to a joke; Mark Twain couldn’t, bet you that! That’s where Meeker beats Mark flat! Just imagine three or four Fellers in Jim Beemer’s store— ‘Long comes Meeker, and some feller Says, “See Meeker’s bum umbreller.
” Quick as lightning Meeker ‘d yell: “Don’t you guy my bumberell! Where’s the feller dares to hoot At this sping-spang bumbershoot? Show me some one dares to call Bad names at my bumbersoll!” Right like that! Right off the reel! Say, you’d ought to heard us squeal! Then, before we’d got our breath, Meeker, solemn sad as death, Says: “Stand up there ‘gainst that wall, Para-bumber-shooter-soll!” Twain? All right! But just give me Some one slick at repartee!

Sestina

 for Jim Cummins 

In Iowa, Jim dreamed that Della Street was Anne Sexton's
twin.
Dave drew a comic strip called the "Adventures of Whitman," about a bearded beer-guzzler in Superman uniform.
Donna dressed like Wallace Stevens in a seersucker summer suit.
To town came Ted Berrigan, saying, "My idea of a bad poet is Marvin Bell.
" But no one has won as many prizes as Philip Levine.
At the restaurant, people were talking about Philip Levine's latest: the Pulitzer.
A toast was proposed by Anne Sexton.
No one saw the stranger, who said his name was Marvin Bell, pour something into Donna's drink.
"In the Walt Whitman Shopping Center, there you feel free," said Ted Berrigan, pulling on a Chesterfield.
Everyone laughed, except T.
S.
Eliot.
I asked for directions.
"You turn right on Gertrude Stein, then bear left.
Three streetlights down you hang a Phil Levine and you're there," Jim said.
When I arrived I saw Ted Berrigan with cigarette ash in his beard.
Graffiti about Anne Sexton decorated the men's room walls.
Beth had bought a quart of Walt Whitman.
Donna looked blank.
"Walt who?" The name didn't ring a Marvin Bell.
You laugh, yet there is nothing inherently funny about Marvin Bell.
You cry, yet there is nothing inherently scary about Robert Lowell.
You drink a bottle of Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, as thirsty as Walt Whitman.
You bring in your car for an oil change, thinking, this place has the aura of Philip Levine.
Then you go home and write: "He kissed her Anne Sexton, and she returned the favor, caressing his Ted Berrigan.
" Donna was candid.
"When the spirit of Ted Berrigan comes over me, I can't resist," she told Marvin Bell, while he stood dejected at the xerox machine.
Anne Sexton came by to circulate the rumor that Robert Duncan had flung his drink on a student who had called him Philip Levine.
The cop read him the riot act.
"I don't care," he said, "if you're Walt Whitman.
" Donna told Beth about her affair with Walt Whitman.
"He was indefatigable, but he wasn't Ted Berrigan.
" The Dow Jones industrials finished higher, led by Philip Levine, up a point and a half on strong earnings.
Marvin Bell ended the day unchanged.
Analyst Richard Howard recommended buying May Swenson and selling Anne Sexton.
In the old days, you liked either Walt Whitman or Anne Sexton, not both.
Ted Berrigan changed that just by going to a ballgame with Marianne Moore.
And one day Philip Levine looked in the mirror and saw Marvin Bell.

The Cross-Roads

 A bullet through his heart at dawn.
On the table a letter signed with a woman's name.
A wind that goes howling round the house, and weeping as in shame.
Cold November dawn peeping through the windows, cold dawn creeping over the floor, creeping up his cold legs, creeping over his cold body, creeping across his cold face.
A glaze of thin yellow sunlight on the staring eyes.
Wind howling through bent branches.
A wind which never dies down.
Howling, wailing.
The gazing eyes glitter in the sunlight.
The lids are frozen open and the eyes glitter.
The thudding of a pick on hard earth.
A spade grinding and crunching.
Overhead, branches writhing, winding, interlacing, unwinding, scattering; tortured twinings, tossings, creakings.
Wind flinging branches apart, drawing them together, whispering and whining among them.
A waning, lobsided moon cutting through black clouds.
A stream of pebbles and earth and the empty spade gleams clear in the moonlight, then is rammed again into the black earth.
Tramping of feet.
Men and horses.
Squeaking of wheels.
"Whoa! Ready, Jim?" "All ready.
" Something falls, settles, is still.
Suicides have no coffin.
"Give us the stake, Jim.
Now.
" Pound! Pound! "He'll never walk.
Nailed to the ground.
" An ash stick pierces his heart, if it buds the roots will hold him.
He is a part of the earth now, clay to clay.
Overhead the branches sway, and writhe, and twist in the wind.
He'll never walk with a bullet in his heart, and an ash stick nailing him to the cold, black ground.
Six months he lay still.
Six months.
And the water welled up in his body, and soft blue spots chequered it.
He lay still, for the ash stick held him in place.
Six months! Then her face came out of a mist of green.
Pink and white and frail like Dresden china, lilies-of-the-valley at her breast, puce-coloured silk sheening about her.
Under the young green leaves, the horse at a foot-pace, the high yellow wheels of the chaise scarcely turning, her face, rippling like grain a-blowing, under her puce-coloured bonnet; and burning beside her, flaming within his correct blue coat and brass buttons, is someone.
What has dimmed the sun? The horse steps on a rolling stone; a wind in the branches makes a moan.
The little leaves tremble and shake, turn and quake, over and over, tearing their stems.
There is a shower of young leaves, and a sudden-sprung gale wails in the trees.
The yellow-wheeled chaise is rocking -- rocking, and all the branches are knocking -- knocking.
The sun in the sky is a flat, red plate, the branches creak and grate.
She screams and cowers, for the green foliage is a lowering wave surging to smother her.
But she sees nothing.
The stake holds firm.
The body writhes, the body squirms.
The blue spots widen, the flesh tears, but the stake wears well in the deep, black ground.
It holds the body in the still, black ground.
Two years! The body has been in the ground two years.
It is worn away; it is clay to clay.
Where the heart moulders, a greenish dust, the stake is thrust.
Late August it is, and night; a night flauntingly jewelled with stars, a night of shooting stars and loud insect noises.
Down the road to Tilbury, silence -- and the slow flapping of large leaves.
Down the road to Sutton, silence -- and the darkness of heavy-foliaged trees.
Down the road to Wayfleet, silence -- and the whirring scrape of insects in the branches.
Down the road to Edgarstown, silence -- and stars like stepping-stones in a pathway overhead.
It is very quiet at the cross-roads, and the sign-board points the way down the four roads, endlessly points the way where nobody wishes to go.
A horse is galloping, galloping up from Sutton.
Shaking the wide, still leaves as he goes under them.
Striking sparks with his iron shoes; silencing the katydids.

Morgan riding to a child-birth over Tilbury way; riding to deliver a woman of her first-born son.
One o'clock from Wayfleet bell tower, what a shower of shooting stars! And a breeze all of a sudden, jarring the big leaves and making them jerk up and down.

Morgan's hat is blown from his head, the horse swerves, and curves away from the sign-post.
An oath -- spurs -- a blurring of grey mist.
A quick left twist, and the gelding is snorting and racing down the Tilbury road with the wind dropping away behind him.
The stake has wrenched, the stake has started, the body, flesh from flesh, has parted.
But the bones hold tight, socket and ball, and clamping them down in the hard, black ground is the stake, wedged through ribs and spine.
The bones may twist, and heave, and twine, but the stake holds them still in line.
The breeze goes down, and the round stars shine, for the stake holds the fleshless bones in line.
Twenty years now! Twenty long years! The body has powdered itself away; it is clay to clay.
It is brown earth mingled with brown earth.
Only flaky bones remain, lain together so long they fit, although not one bone is knit to another.
The stake is there too, rotted through, but upright still, and still piercing down between ribs and spine in a straight line.
Yellow stillness is on the cross-roads, yellow stillness is on the trees.
The leaves hang drooping, wan.
The four roads point four yellow ways, saffron and gamboge ribbons to the gaze.
A little swirl of dust blows up Tilbury road, the wind which fans it has not strength to do more; it ceases, and the dust settles down.
A little whirl of wind comes up Tilbury road.
It brings a sound of wheels and feet.
The wind reels a moment and faints to nothing under the sign-post.
Wind again, wheels and feet louder.
Wind again -- again -- again.
A drop of rain, flat into the dust.
Drop! -- Drop! Thick heavy raindrops, and a shrieking wind bending the great trees and wrenching off their leaves.
Under the black sky, bowed and dripping with rain, up Tilbury road, comes the procession.
A funeral procession, bound for the graveyard at Wayfleet.
Feet and wheels -- feet and wheels.
And among them one who is carried.
The bones in the deep, still earth shiver and pull.
There is a quiver through the rotted stake.
Then stake and bones fall together in a little puffing of dust.
Like meshes of linked steel the rain shuts down behind the procession, now well along the Wayfleet road.
He wavers like smoke in the buffeting wind.
His fingers blow out like smoke, his head ripples in the gale.
Under the sign-post, in the pouring rain, he stands, and watches another quavering figure drifting down the Wayfleet road.
Then swiftly he streams after it.
It flickers among the trees.
He licks out and winds about them.
Over, under, blown, contorted.
Spindrift after spindrift; smoke following smoke.
There is a wailing through the trees, a wailing of fear, and after it laughter -- laughter -- laughter, skirling up to the black sky.
Lightning jags over the funeral procession.
A heavy clap of thunder.
Then darkness and rain, and the sound of feet and wheels.

Infidelity

 Three Triangles

TRIANGLE ONE

My husband put some poison in my beer,
And fondly hoped that I would drink it up.
He would get rid of me - no bloody fear, For when his back was turned I changed the cup.
He took it all, and if he did not die, Its just because he's heartier than I.
And now I watch and watch him night and day dreading that he will try it on again.
I'm getting like a skeleton they say, And every time I feel the slightest pain I think: he's got me this time.

Oh the beast! He might have let me starve to death, at least.
But all he thinks of is that shell-pink nurse.
I know as well as well that they're in loe.
I'm sure they kiss, and maybe do things worse, Although she looks as gentle as a dove.
I see their eyes with passion all aglow: I know they only wait for me to go.
Ah well, I'll go (I have to, anyway), But they will pay the price of lust and sin.
I've sent a letter to the police to say: "If I should die its them have dome me in.
" And now a lot of vernal I'll take, And go to sleep, and never, never wake.
But won't I laugh! Aye, even when I'm dead, To think of them both hanging by the head.
TRIANGLE TWO My wife's a fancy bit of stuff it's true; But that's no reason she should do me dirt.
Of course I know a girl is tempted to, With mountain men a-fussin' round her skirt.
A 'andome women's bound to 'ave a 'eart, But that's no reason she should be a tart.
I didn't oughter give me 'ome address To sergeant when 'e last went on 'is leave; And now the 'ole shebang's a bloody mess; I didn't think the missis would deceive.
And 'ere was I, a-riskin' of me life, And thee was 'e, a-sleepin' wiv me wife.
Go blimy, but this thing 'as got to stop.
Well, next time when we makes a big attack, As soon as we gets well across the top, I'll plug 'em (accidental) in the back.
'E'll cop a blinkin' packet in 'is spine, And that'll be the end of 'im, the swine.
It's easy in the muck-up of a fight; And all me mates'll think it was the foe.
And 'oo can say it doesn't serve 'im right? And I'll go 'ome and none will ever know, My missis didn't oughter do that sort o' thing, Seein' as 'ow she wears my weddin' ring.
Well, we'll be just as 'appy as before, When otherwise she might a' bin a 'ore.
TRIANGLE THREE It's fun to see Joe fuss around that kid.
I know 'e loves 'er more than all the rest, Because she's by a lot the prettiest.
'E wouldn't lose 'er for a 'undred quid.
I love 'er too, because she isn't his'n; But Jim, his brother's, wot they've put in prision.
It's 'ard to 'ave a 'usband wot you 'ate; So soft that if 'e knowed you'd 'ad a tup, 'E wouldn't 'ave the guts to beat you up.
Now Jim - 'e's wot I call a proper mate.
I daren't try no monkey tricks wiv 'im.
'E'd flay be 'ide off (quite right, too) would Jim.
I won't let on to Jim when 'e comes out; But Joe - each time I see 'im kissin' Nell, I 'ave to leave the room and laughlike 'ell.
"E'll 'ave the benefit (damn little) of the doubt.
So let 'im kiss our Nellie fit to smother; There ain't no proof 'er father is 'is brother.
Well, anyway I've no remorse.
You see, I've kept my frailty in the family.
