America

 America I've given you all and now I'm nothing.
America two dollars and twentyseven cents January 17, 1956.
I can't stand my own mind.
America when will we end the human war? Go **** yourself with your atom bomb.
I don't feel good don't bother me.
I won't write my poem till I'm in my right mind.
America when will you be angelic? When will you take off your clothes? When will you look at yourself through the grave? When will you be worthy of your million Trotskyites? America why are your libraries full of tears? America when will you send your eggs to India? I'm sick of your insane demands.
When can I go into the supermarket and buy what I need with my good looks? America after all it is you and I who are perfect not the next world.
Your machinery is too much for me.
You made me want to be a saint.
There must be some other way to settle this argument.
Burroughs is in Tangiers I don't think he'll come back it's sinister.
Are you being sinister or is this some form of practical joke? I'm trying to come to the point.

Kitcheners School

 1898

Being a translation of the song that was made by a Mohammedanschoolmaster of Bengal Infantry (some time on service at Suakim)when he heard that Kitchener was taking money from the English tobuild a Madrissa for Hubshees -- or a college for the Sudanese.
Oh Hubshee, carry your shoes in your hand and bow your head on your breast! This is the message of Kitchener who did not break you in jest.
It was permitted to him to fulfil the long-appointed years; Reaching the end ordained of old over your dead Emirs.
He stamped only before your walls, and the Tomb ye knew was dust: He gathered up under his armpits all the swords of your trust: He set a guard on your granaries, securing the weak from the strong: He said: -- " Go work the waterwheels that were abolished so long.
" He said: -- "Go safely, being abased.
I have accomplished my vow.
" That was the mercy of Kitchener.
Cometh his madness now! He does not desire as ye desire, nor devise as ye devise: He is preparing a second host -- an army to make you wise.
Not at the mouth of his clean-lipped guns shall ye learn his name again, But letter by letter, from Kaf to Kaf, at the mouths of his chosen men.
He has gone back to his own city, not seeking presents or bribes, But openly asking the English for money to buy you Hakims and scribes.
Knowing that ye are forfeit by battle and have no right to live, He begs for money to bring you learning -- and all the English give.
It is their treasure -- it is their pleasure -- thus are their hearts inclined: For Allah created the English mad -- the maddest of all mankind! They do not consider the Meaning ofThings; they consult not creed nor clan.
Behold, they clap the slave on the back, and behold, he ariseth a man! They terribly carpet the earth with dead, and before their cannon cool, They walk unarmed by twos and threes to call the living to school.
How is this reason (which is their reason) to judge a scholar's worth, By casting a ball at three straight sticks and defending the same with a fourth? But this they do (which is doubtless a spell) and other matters more strange, Until, by the operation of years, the hearts of their scholars change: Till these make come and go great boats or engines upon the rail (But always the English watch near by to prop them when they fail); Till these make laws of their own choice and Judges of their And all the mad English obey the Judges and say that that Law is good.
Certainly they were mad from of old; but I think one new thing, That the magic whereby they work their magic -- wherefrom their fortunes spring -- May be that they show all peoples their magic and ask no price in return.
Wherefore, since ye are bond to that magic, O Hubshee, make haste and learn! Certainly also is Kitchener mad.
But one sure thing I know -- If he who broke you be minded to teach you, to his Madrissa go! Go, and carry your shoes in your hand and bow your head on your breast, For he who did not slay you in sport, he will not teach you in jest.

Holy-Cross Day

 ON WHICH THE JEWS WERE FORCED TO
ATTEND AN ANNUAL CHRISTIAN SERMON
IN ROME.
[``Now was come about Holy-Cross Day, and now must my lord preach his first sermon to the Jews: as it was of old cared for in tine merciful bowels of the Church, that, so to speak, a crumb at least from her conspicuous table here in Rome should be, though but once yearly, cast to the famishing dogs, under-trampled and bespitten-upon beneath the feet of the guests.
And a moving sight in truth, this, of so many of the besotted blind restif and ready-to-perish Hebrews! now maternally brought---nay (for He saith, `Compel them to come in') haled, as it were, by the head and hair, and against their obstinate hearts, to partake of the heavenly grace.
What awakening, what striving with tears, what working of a yeasty conscience! Nor was my lord wanting to himself on so apt an occasion; witness the abundance of conversions which did incontinently reward him: though not to my lord be altogether the glory.

``We withstood Christ then? Be mindful how ``At least we withstand Barabbas now! ``Was our outrage sore? But the worst we spared, ``To have called these---Christians, had we dared! ``Let defiance to them pay mistrust of Thee, ``And Rome make amends for Calvary! XIX.
``By the torture, prolonged from age to age, ``By the infamy, Israel's heritage, ``By the Ghetto's plague, by the garb's disgrace, ``By the badge of shame, by the felon's place, ``By the branding-tool, the bloody whip, ``And the summons to Christian fellowship,--- XX.
``We boast our proof that at least the Jew ``Would wrest Christ's name from the Devil's crew.

The Demon Drink

 Oh, thou demon Drink, thou fell destroyer;
Thou curse of society, and its greatest annoyer.
What hast thou done to society, let me think? I answer thou hast caused the most of ills, thou demon Drink.
Thou causeth the mother to neglect her child, Also the father to act as he were wild, So that he neglects his loving wife and family dear, By spending his earnings foolishly on whisky, rum and beer.
And after spending his earnings foolishly he beats his wife- The man that promised to protect her during life- And so the man would if there was no drink in society, For seldom a man beats his wife in a state of sobriety.
And if he does, perhaps he finds his wife fou', Then that causes, no doubt, a great hullaballo; When he finds his wife drunk he begins to frown, And in a fury of passion he knocks her down.
And in that knock down she fractures her head, And perhaps the poor wife she is killed dead, Whereas, if there was no strong drink to be got, To be killed wouldn't have been the poor wife's lot.
Then the unfortunate husband is arrested and cast into jail, And sadly his fate he does bewail; And he curses the hour that ever was born, And paces his cell up and down very forlorn.
And when the day of his trial draws near, No doubt for the murdering of his wife he drops a tear, And he exclaims, "Oh, thou demon Drink, through thee I must die," And on the scaffold he warns the people from drink to fly, Because whenever a father or a mother takes to drink, Step by step on in crime they do sink, Until their children loses all affection for them, And in justice we cannot their children condemn.
The man that gets drunk is little else than a fool, And is in the habit, no doubt, of advocating for Home Rule; But the best Home Rule for him, as far as I can understand, Is the abolition of strong drink from the land.
And the men that get drunk in general wants Home Rule; But such men, I rather think, should keep their heads cool, And try and learn more sense, I most earnestlty do pray, And help to get strong drink abolished without delay.
If drink was abolished how many peaceful homes would there be, Just, for instance in the beautiful town of Dundee; then this world would be heaven, whereas it's a hell, An the people would have more peace in it to dwell Alas! strong drink makes men and women fanatics, And helps to fill our prisons and lunatics; And if there was no strong drink such cases wouldn't be, Which would be a very glad sight for all christians to see.
O admit, a man may be a very good man, But in my opinion he cannot be a true Christian As long as he partakes of strong drink, The more that he may differently think.
But no matter what he thinks, I say nay, For by taking it he helps to lead his brither astray, Whereas, if he didn't drink, he would help to reform society, And we would soon do away with all inebriety.
Then, for the sake of society and the Church of God, Let each one try to abolish it at home and abroad; Then poverty and crime would decrease and be at a stand, And Christ's Kingdom would soon be established throughout the land.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, pause and think, And try to abolish the foul fiend, Drink.
Let such doctrine be taught in church and school, That the abolition of strong drink is the only Home Rule.

Dan The Wreck

 Tall, and stout, and solid-looking, 
Yet a wreck; 
None would think Death's finger's hooking 
Him from deck.
Cause of half the fun that's started -- `Hard-case' Dan -- Isn't like a broken-hearted, Ruined man.
Walking-coat from tail to throat is Frayed and greened -- Like a man whose other coat is Being cleaned; Gone for ever round the edging Past repair -- Waistcoat pockets frayed with dredging After `sprats' no longer there.
Wearing summer boots in June, or Slippers worn and old -- Like a man whose other shoon are Getting soled.
Pants? They're far from being recent -- But, perhaps, I'd better not -- Says they are the only decent Pair he's got.
And his hat, I am afraid, is Troubling him -- Past all lifting to the ladies By the brim.
But, although he'd hardly strike a Girl, would Dan, Yet he wears his wreckage like a Gentleman! Once -- no matter how the rest dressed -- Up or down -- Once, they say, he was the best-dressed Man in town.
Must have been before I knew him -- Now you'd scarcely care to meet And be noticed talking to him In the street.
Drink the cause, and dissipation, That is clear -- Maybe friend or kind relation Cause of beer.
And the talking fool, who never Reads or thinks, Says, from hearsay: `Yes, he's clever; But, you know, he drinks.
' Been an actor and a writer -- Doesn't whine -- Reckoned now the best reciter In his line.
Takes the stage at times, and fills it -- `Princess May' or `Waterloo'.
Raise a sneer! -- his first line kills it, `Brings 'em', too.
Where he lives, or how, or wherefore No one knows; Lost his real friends, and therefore Lost his foes.
Had, no doubt, his own romances -- Met his fate; Tortured, doubtless, by the chances And the luck that comes too late.
Now and then his boots are polished, Collar clean, And the worst grease stains abolished By ammonia or benzine: Hints of some attempt to shove him From the taps, Or of someone left to love him -- Sister, p'r'aps.
After all, he is a grafter, Earns his cheer -- Keeps the room in roars of laughter When he gets outside a beer.
Yarns that would fall flat from others He can tell; How he spent his `stuff', my brothers, You know well.
Manner puts a man in mind of Old club balls and evening dress, Ugly with a handsome kind of Ugliness.

If You are a Man

 If you are a man, and believe in the destiny of mankind
then say to yourself: we will cease to care
about property and money and mechanical devices,
and open our consciousness to the deep, mysterious life
that we are now cut off from.
The machine shall be abolished from the earth again; it is a mistake that mankind has made; money shall cease to be, and property shall cease to perplex and we will find the way to immediate contact with life and with one another.
To know the moon as we have never known yet she is knowable.
