The Importance of Constructive Comments

by Marilyn Williams

In the world in which we live, there are too many of us who do not speak our minds. If you read a good book, even if it's not good, you should comment if you are allowed, for it can help the writer improve their writing.

It is sad that people read poems, books, newspapers, etc., and never comment a single thought on what they read. Is it a fear of hurting the writer's feelings or a fear that you, the reader, have of expressing your opinion on what you have read? Keeping silent and holding your expression on what you read leaves the writer to ponder his position as a writer. The writer may think they have done an excellent job when they have not, or vice versa.

So, when there is an opportunity for readers to comment on what they read, they should not be shy and hold back. Let the writer know that they did not waste the reader's time and that, in some way, the reader learned something new from what was read.

Please write a comment or critique on what you have read to help your fellow writers in their pursuit of writing excellence.
