Where's Nancy

Perhaps I was too weary, perhaps I slept too long,
Now I must find my Army, but every turn seems wrong.
               "Where's Nancy?"

My head is hurting, my feet are sore, and I really don't feel well.
All I want is to find that river, the one they call Moselle.
                 ~ but~
               "Where's Nancy?:"

I don't know why they left me. I know where they must be.
They're fighting Germans far to the north in a town they call Nancy.
                "Where's Nancy?"

I finally find the river. I hear the bombs loud noise.
Sacre' Bleu. I see my team. I can join the Army boys.
               ~And best of all~
                   "Here's Nancy".

*Nancy is a town in France. American forces
had a skirmish there during WW2.

When I was stationed in Germany while in the Army, we once rode bicycles from Ettlingon to Nancy.

It was during World War 2. It is sad when people die.

Ah dear hilda, i can only imagine the pain and all the fear that so many must have fought during war even then and even now, its so sad to witness. One would only hope and wish in this decade and century people would support and advocate for peace but politicians have their own agendas and so many innocent souls are caught in that. Suffering and dying, i am glad you mentioned what nancy means, i wouldnt have known. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, always a pleasure reading you dear hilda

Thank you for your comment. Some wars are triggered by the economy, other wars are age old and spanning hundreds and thousand of years. I sometimes wonder if intermarriages would help dilute the distance. But we can't legislate it.

Wow! Well done. Captured, thank God by your writing only, from the first intriguing word. With the pain and suffering, believe it or not, my father had many funny stories about war 2. One looses his mind, but never his sense of humor -- crazy as it sounds, humor was needed if to survive. Not enough space to get into detail. Jeep driver, loved his jeep. $5 you can't make to the top of that mountain. 4 fools sneak our of camp in the middle of night. Almost but could not reach the top. Next morning, back in camp. All hell rained down from that mountain. There must have been hundreds of guns pointed at those clowning fools.

It would have hurt my ego. I guess the enemy was choosing its time. Thank you for your story. I like war poems, one being 'the Charge of the Light Brigade'.

Great reminiscences of the fight that took place such a long time ago. Loved how you repeated that important line.

Thank you. The battle was real, the lost soldier was fiction. I don't think they would wait for someone who had over slept however.

I have been and love traveling all over France, is sad that today we support a genocide instead of fight against it. Beautiful poem.

Nice memory there, Hilda. Seems so few have any feel for WW2 now. Far more horrible than any war that's happened since. Far more! ~ Gershon
