Nature's Peril

While strolling on this summer morn so fair
with warming sun rays soft upon my cheeks
and gentle breezes blowing through my hair,
a tender dulcet day without a care,
I deeply ponder thoughts to which life speaks.

A red-winged blackbird floats along the breeze
      and lights upon a cattail by the lake;
his trills lamenting sights for which he pleas,
pollution everywhere is all he sees.
I wonder if mankind will e’er awake?

A bullfrog sitting by the water’s edge
upon a lily pad, he croaks his tune
lamenting all around the withered sedge
that’s littered with debris his croaks allege.
I wonder if mankind will wise up soon?

For it is we who, through our careless deeds,
have scarred the beauty of this precious land
to satisfy our selfish greedy needs
without a single thought to where this leads,
         intents upon fulfilling our demands.

But are we not the keepers of this earth,
the ones who, nature’s beauty, must preserve
   for future generations, giving birth
      to Mother Nature’s everlasting worth?
If not then we will get what we deserve.

This is such a gorgeous, thought provoking poem John. Great imagery/artistry. Very skilful and inspiring- ‘ I deeply ponder thoughts to which life speaks’- what a line! The last stanza gives such a powerful message/warning that we should all heed. I love your style of poetry. Keep inspiring! Blessings to you.

We have bought a house in SANDTON, but for years lived on the East Rand. Down the side road of our home was a very big farm which farmed sunflowers one year and Mealies - Corn - every second year. So peaceful so beautiful and an ideal place to take pets on a long walk. we loved it but moved closer to Johannesburg to be nearer to one of our sons, as the eldest and his wife emigrated to Australia. But unfortunately the plight of Planet Earth is becoming a frightening reality my friend Hugs JENN.

John, I grew up in the country, falling asleep to the bullfrogs evening serenade. Memories of our ducks swimming on our pond, hiking miles through the woods and fields surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife. The outdoors is my peace and comfort place. I cannot understand how people can leave trash behind, it's sickening. Nature is a gift to all of us. It also inspires beautiful poems, such as yours. Annette????

Hi Annette, thanks for stopping by. Sounds like you had a great childhood, I grew up in the city and sometimes think I missed out on so much when I hear stories like yours. Have a great weekend. John

I share your thoughts on this. We must take care of Nature; if we don't, it will be scarred like you said. We take its beauty for granted. Beautiful poem!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Paige. I have always enjoyed the outdoors since I was a young lad, a long time ago, and I always made it a point to leave the land as I found it, carrying my trash out with me. I just can't understand why people think it's ok just to throw their trash wherever. John

Each and every action, whether good or bad, has its share of consequences. Your thoughts tug at the heartstrings. So sad indeed, how our world is being treated. I'm holding your words so close. Many wonderful blessings to you, my dear sweet friend. Hugs, Brandy
