Notes About The Poem

Leverage / Edward Ibeh

Just One Thing to Leverage

She believed her Barbie's and Ken's
had shared a love far more complex
than any feelings they'd expressed --
AND dolls couldn't even self-dress!!!

She knew they were a mistake -
one she wanted them to address.
Her thoughts led to a request -
they both take a fear of change test.

Pleased to speak free, she confessed
being a part of couple failure debris
and held no fear of changing things.
She sensed relief peak as he owned
his tendency to cultivate regrets and
said he'd be more than fine living alone.

Once they aced the test, she at last
felt their tensions loose resentments.
Then they intelligently addressed
the logistics involved in couple deletion.

Next, they tossed their dysfunction map
and then summed up zero further cost
applied in paving a way out of this trap.
She was sure they'd only leveraged crap.

Just a satirizing write. I have fun penning them and I think they offer people a chance to laugh at situations that are otherwise anything but funny. When I read it to Tim, he laughed as much I did when the poem ended that way, I didn't see it coming! It just fit so well ... CayCay

CayCay, getting out of a relationship is hard indeed. You do make it seem a bit complicated and that's not a bad thing...since it is complicated. Even just being direct is not simple. Smiles!!

Thanks Duke, 'tis but a satirical write meant to bring giggles but I'm not sure that's happening. CayCay

A lot of emotion and metaphors in your poem, which I admit, I found it difficult. Still I detect themes of love, anxiety, regret, and detachment, all wrapped in a strikingly rhythmic and emotional structure. If this is for the contest, best of luck.

Hey, Victor, it is meant to be funny, satirical in nature. I regret you felt it weighed one down with all kinds of emotions erratically flying about (that's what I got from your comment). I've revised it a bit to avoid that. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Ah, yes. 'Ye olde Anxiety Test.' ... Takes me back to the MMPI test I once took, with questions like: Are your stools usually soft and brown? ... Are you a special agent of God?... Was your father really a good man?... Is there someone following you lately?... etc. 558 questions. Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory, it was called. I was a basket case after taking it. Of course, this has little, if anything, to do with your poem -- but at least it was 'dysfunctional.' :)
