Notes About The Poem

Heartbroken, Yet Love Remains

"I'm not sure if the love that brought us together
was worth the pain that tore us apart." ~ Boomsumo.com

I have to unlearn what some label 'love'
not the kind that coos like a turtle dove
That's the type of romance that makes you dance
But I was struck by lightning from above
with emotions that never had a chance

It roared like thunder deep inside my heart
Couldn't bear the moments we were apart
It was difficult breathing without him
His name a prayer at every day's start
From sunrise until twilight had grown dim

I quickly stitched my love into his world
With silver threads that were gently uncurled
Never had I been outspoken or bold
but passion's arrows at us had been hurled
and those silver threads quickly turned to gold

Sorrowfully, some threads break when they're frayed
And although it ended, for him I prayed
His friend, his lover and then his never
The fault was mine to take, I am afraid
A love born and died yet lives forever

Heartbroken, I need to unlearn his name
How to forgive myself for I'm to blame
How to stop seeing his face in my dreams,
to keep breathing when nothing is the same
when our golden threads were ripped from their seams

Sonnets are written of love, not of pain
Tell my heart not to ever love again,
my hand not write of love for another,
I, not be struck by lightning in the rain
Heartbroken, I feel that I shall smother

Tell me how to unlearn love, I beseech
Is mending a heart something one can teach?
Should I bury mine in an unmarked grave?
Heartbroken, love is not within my reach
What we once shared, neither of us could save

Lin, it is amazing how lost or failed love can hurt so much for so long. You've explored something that's part of our internal wiring. Repairing the circuits is something that takes a great deal of effort and is ultimately not 100% doable. When we can understand and think about the past and when we can laugh about it, that is a really good sign. A lot of mourning occurs first for sure. I wonder what allows us to grieve in a positive way? Smiles!!

Time dear poet, time to reflect, time to forgive oneself, time to be grateful for a loved lived and shared, time to remember with a smile for having loved, time to look back and say once I was a rose in full bloom...Frederic

Dear Frederic, even old wounds can still inflict pain. Thank you for placing value on what was once a rose in full bloom. ;-)

Oh, Jan no one here knows your heart as well as I do. You've been my confidant, my sounding board, my best friend here for nearly ten years. You know the truths behind my verses and when my words still make you cry, I know I've accomplished in a poem what I hope others will feel. Thanks you... thank you. ;-)
