Yes, I agree. Call it mood or impulse to write, it can come from anywhere. One of my sources is the happenings around, of which there are many. But I have to choose from those that are known so that in a poetic medium all can appreciate. Nature is another inspiration. It can be what one reads, sees, hears...

I write my ideas down in my notebook as soon as possible because if I don't I might not remember them later. Sometimes I write phrases I think I'll use sometime or turn into a whole poem at the top of the page.

I don't write prolifically like some but I wait till a word, phrase, or theme catches my imagination. For example, I had the words, "event horizon" in my head for a while and it eventually became a poem. I don't write under compulsion nor do I feel the need to meet some sort of quota. When the mood strikes, I write. I've got "Linda Jane" in my brain this week. Stay tuned..

Thank you Tom for sharing your experience. You are lucky you can rely on your memory. These days , we are too preoccupied that our brains become overloaded with information, hence, the need for a pen and paper like what Sara mentioned earlier.^___^

I can relate to your thoughts; yes, would be nice to have endless, uninterrupted hours to write. But reality 'bites.' I agree that the impetus for writing poetry is in the day-to-day living and one's willingness to mindfully observe. I keep a note pad and pen in my car, on my nightstand, and in the kitchen so when my heart begins to scribble, I can briefly pause long enough to get down the jest of what's going through my mind. My husband uses a mini-recorder to accomplish the same thing. I have what seems like a gazillion pieces of paper strewn over my desk or in my desk drawer. I take comfort in knowing that I have access to poetic ideas that otherwise would've vanished.

Thank you Sara. Your insights are inspiring. People now adays rely on phone and any gadgets to store ideas. Having a pencil and paper in areas where you could reach easily when muse strikes is a fantastic idea. ^___^
