Brian, I quite agree with your assessment of Lowell's "Bath". It reminds me of Gertrude Stein's "Tommy Buttons" (1914) written as PP, but when read aloud, it can easily be understood as FV. GS's "Stanzas in Meditation" (1932?) written as FV can just as easily be understood as PP. My point is that both forms, except for lineation, can be understood as either form when read aloud. Both ways use various poetic devices and depend upon natural speech for their aural form. It seems to me that PP and FV are flip sides of the same coin, separated only by lineation. ~beto

Brian, I agree that much FV is not poetic, simply narrative prose, what I refer to as a lineated diary :-). ~beto

I guess Beto ,it matters not provided they are read or listened to.In the FV case it too often used when it not poetic in principle.

RE UPDATE EXAMPLE from Amy:BATH When read aloud,I would class as 'Verse Libre** and would be a definite PP in any of my sponsor contests! .....**more on this form in a forth coming blog

Sometimes when reading a novel I can read a passage that stands out from the rest, a section that almost seems poetic, but to me that’s not poetry. Even if a short story is written with above the average eloquence, it still remains prose however beautifully it’s written.

Prose seems to be a fancy way of just saying narrative form, but also I hear there are two types of prose: regular and poetic. When you submit to Soup, both come up. I would see a narrative or an essay as regular prose and prose poetry as using more poetic devices with the way you do your lines, and also more lyrical or metrical perhaps? I often feel like we poets here are often using prose or narrative and labeling it as free verse and vice versa , labeling an authentic free verse poem as prose. (that does not seem to happen nearly as often)

Andrea, I don't understand why you (seem to) equate prose with narrative, since much poetry is also narrative. I agree that PP uses many poetic devices. If we view PP as non-lineated FV then it would be poetry IMO. ~beto

Bian with his 'devilish' difficult conundrums ! - You will remember an ad on ITV , many years ago - "Is it a biscuit or is it a bar ?" Solve that and you've got your answer ! Those who find it easy to rhyme, know the answer ! Even my Irish brogue dare not attempt a coherent reply !!

Poetry ,Sean like most arts blurs at the edges. One or two more 'testing ' questions still to come ! Watch this space,...save your place

with a lilting brogue the Irish can make anything sound like poetry....however a brogue is quite difficult to squeeze through a pen

I tried answering your question Brian but ended up tripping up over my own answer. :) I thought about the importance and reliance on the poetic qualities of structure, cadence, use of metaphors, structure of sentence and use of words but I have to hold my hands up and say I'm struggling with my articulation of it all. I will keep thinking. :) PS: tried the links but they don't link anywhere for me.

You have identified the conflict and contradiction Gary...can prose ever be poetry ?
