All I Need

Greatly inspired from a poem
by Oliver Wendell Holmes with
a borrowed phrase or two.

Little I ask; my wants are few;
I only wish a roof and home,
a simple one this wretch will do
    that I may call my own -
to within its walls live and age
with a memoir to fill my page.

Plain fare is all I need for me;
three meals a day a hearty fill,
and oft to satisfy a thirsty plea
    water my dry lips to spill.
And of fortune if I should ask
a cold stubbie or whisky flask.

I care not for gold and land,
nor chattel or title to obey;
just a mortgage and in my hand
    money enough to pay.
I only this favour ask and pose
lest the bank on me foreclose.

My clothes I do proudly wear;
no robes of bejewelled prize,
for king and yeoman are I swear
    equal all in God's eyes!
Nay I am not of that noble ilk
and need no garments of silk.

I do not seek what I have not,
like a rich man's cars or toys;
my contentment is with my lot
    and in life's simple joys.
A humble man beholden for
if this world grant me more.

Truly not I begrudge no man
his Hope; his Fate; his Love;
I seek truths none greater than
    the word of God thereof -
and to behold if it is His will
that grace unto death until.

Note: a stubbie is in Australia
         a small bottle of beer.

    It is said that when a man becomes satisfied with less, only then will he be truly happy. Blessings Rick.

    Simple needs and expectations allow for a Universe of joyous appreciation, for everything "added unto" is blessing! I'm slowly learning this that you have grasped, but still far too complex for my own good, (and I don't mean in any sort of good or grand way, just my endlessly spinning maelstrom of ill-firing neurons), and while I don't believe in TRUE chaos, that seems to be very close to what's happening midst my mental matter. Superb write, Oh Keithly One, and heading to my favs! Blessings!

    Well, where does one so struck with chills begin to comment on this great adaptation of a toweringly delicious piece? Doctor Holmes I have read; "Contentment" is perhaps his magnum opus..."The Chambered Nautilus' is doubtless better, methinks:-) But "Under the Violets" far outdoes both, I would say. Yet, "Cacoethes Scribendi" is all I ask for herebelow - as my wants indeed are few! Now, Keith, your nifty composition is evidently not far from the departed ace, that hugely finessed man of letters we must adore! Keep it up, it's thoroughly invigorating!

    Being grateful for all you have, is just great Panagiota

    It is a fantastic thing to be happy with what you have achieved. Have a great day.

    I haven’t heard the term Stubbie in years. We called it the same thing here in Canada.

    This is archaic and beautifully done. you sound like someone from another century and I mean that as a compliment! I was very impressed. You have a fan!

    I hope everyone on this earth would have what you want and it really isn't much to ask, but there is a few that wish they did too and don't have it.. Can not even find a job because their busy living in their car and the shelters are full and Wal-Mart and McDonalds won't let them come in to clean themselves in their sinks. Sorry Keith I shouldn't go on.. Perfect write my friend...

    Some of the best things in life are free, I never asked or needed much. A bike, a guitar, a fishing pole...small stuff that brought as much joy to my life as anything worth fortunes could. Excellent poem, Keith. Truly enjoyed...Charlie

    I feel this way too at least on a good part of it, Kieth. Just give me my pen and paper (and my tv and popcorn) and I am good to go!! very nicely done.

    Your thoughts wrap around me, and so gently. Even though someone may not have much, perhaps nothing at all. True joy is knowing you have enough, whatever that may be. Little is much. To one that has an humble heart. A positive attitude. This is beautiful, in so many ways. :) Brandy

    A heart of humility is truly worth more than all else. It will see what God is trying to show it. This is beautiful Keith.

    It's commendable that one should be content with whatever they have. I enjoyed your message in poetic form, especially the line about being equal in God's eyes. Congratulations on your placement!

    Bravo, Keith. I think most of us are in agreement here. I have yet to see a uhaul or armored truck in a funeral procession. The love in one's heart is all one needs.I enjoyed your poem immensely.
