The Road We Share
When every road turns restless under skies of gray,
And midnight folds its silence through the town,
If every sign that promised home gives way,
I’ll be the steady hand that won't let you down.
You need not hide the weather in your chest,
Or call the thunder only passing rain;
The parts of you that cannot rest
May lean against me through the pain.
I cannot promise every path is bright,
Or swear the hills won't rise too steep;
But I will guard the flame until first light,
And stay beside you when the fears run deep.
For love is not a lighthouse made of stone
That swears the sea will never claim a sail;
It's a flame two trembling hands have known,
A little light protected from the gale.
So let the mountains gather, one by one,
Let restless winds erase roads we knew;
Even beneath a sky that hides the sun,
I’ll find the truest road walking next to you.
And if you whisper, “I am lost tonight,”
I won't dress the darkness up as new;
I’ll strike one match against the waiting night
And guard the little flame that lives in you.
When morning lifts the darkness from the blue
And pours its gold across the broken land,
You’ll know that every mile I walked with you
Was building the love giving us the strength to stand.
