The Prairie Man

The prairie lies flat, not a tree in sight,
The sun's fading fast and soon will be night.

The blades of grass sway and bend in the breeze,
No movement abound, but for the birds and the bees.

Off in the distance a plume of smoke,
The lump I can't swallow for fear I might choke.

I dare not think of the dangers at hand,
What on earth has brought me to this wild, untamed land?

Free land they said and a chance for a better life,
One for myself, my children and my wife.

Fresh food from our garden, tended by our own hand,
Riches rewarded with loving care from the land.

Clear running water and fish in the stream,
I couldn't have asked for a better man's dream.

To have you beside me as lover and friend,
The hardships and triumphs we'll see to the end.

We'll raise up our family, according to God's will,
And when this life's over, burry me atop yonder hill.

In heaven we'll meet, beside God's pearly gate,
Please don't rush darling, forever I'll wait.
