Growing Pains

It felt like yesterday that we were riding our bikes down our empty street
The streets we ruled, the streets we got to keep
As if tomorrow was never going to come
The sun would grow old above us as we watched on for the start of our lives
The temperature rising at ever heave of your chest
The willows dancing before us, putting on their best show
The sounds of the birds echoing our names, a calling
A warning that no matter what to happen, the promise would be kept
You promised to love me in depth, and never leave me
To hold my hand when I was cold in the august months
And you promised to talk to my dad and explain to him why I was sad
And to never complain about our troubles to each other, because we knew how we felt
We could feel the energy exploding from our skin
We knew not to speak, but only hear the sounds, the silence from our lips
But the birds warning did not help you
Because today is the third day you haven’t showed up to our special spot when we are feeling down
I thought you could feel it, feel that my mum died, feel the sadness
I thought you would know I needed you to hear, hear the silence as my sobs filled the air
I thought you cared about me, I thought you could feel my tense emotions
I thought… I thought you loved me
But now I am left to grow old with the daily sun
To watch the willows put on a show, without someone to share my popcorn with
To listen to the birds, slow down their warnings, moving on to the next problem
They no longer call your name, you no longer listen to their warnings
You left me alone in a spot I thought I could call home
I’m living in vain
I listen to the birds, calling in the rain
But you left, and that’s all a part of growing pains
