the chinese bagpipe player

the games are over and the team called right said fred
take home the tug of war prize a bespectacled man
in full kilt clobber takes to the brink of the hill
and a waft of circulatory inebriated borborygmus
pumps out auld lang syne as the great unwashed gather round
heart-rending plaintive and sheepish no one sings
but they just listen at this cultural give and take with
the opportunity to decorate your own gingerbread man
for the equivalent of five quid and a bouncy castle
full of toddlers howling as they can't get down
from the turrets stuck like toady sycophants
and parents too pixilated to care as
we celebrate the land of cakes
and finally someone does
shed a tear we're in awe
we're touched the air
all gone he stops
we applaud like
virgin
bogeymen
and someone points out
he was miming to a backing track the whole time
