Untitled

It was 3:00am when I got the call. The call that I’ve been dreading. The call we’ve all been dreading. The Narcan didn’t work this time and you were on your way to the hospital. I got in my car, sick to my stomach, because I knew what would be waiting for me when I got there. Yet, somehow, all at once I hoped they had revived you. I mean you’ve survived this before right? Surely you could make it. Surely you’d have at least one more chance to fight the monster you’ve been facing. Even as they take me to the back room and I know then that you’re dead, I wait for the doctor to tell me that I’m wrong.

He never does.

Then it’s time to see you. You look like you, but empty. I suppose that it makes sense. As I stand there I start to notice all the things you’re missing:
A smile so big your eyes are almost shut.
The color in your cheeks.
Warmth radiating from your skin.
The laugh that made me smile.
The voice that brought me comfort.
The words that gave me peace.

But that’s when it hit me: You were missing something else.

That monster you died fighting, you’d be happy to hear that he died too.
The eyes that squinted when you smiled were no longer laced with pain.
There was no quiver in your voice, no turmoil, no shame.
I couldn’t see the tired face from all the nights your mind denied you peace.
There were no protests from your lips when I told you everything would be okay.
I couldn’t hear a single thing.

Though selfishly I’d take you back just the way you were, quiet’s all you’ve ever wanted, friend. You’ve finally been heard.

Home

Home

My home was never a house with four walls
Or a Mom and Dad with some friends between us all.
The more I look, the more I find,
That home is entirely a state of mind.

My home was never a house with four walls
But, a place where I felt vulnerable and small.
A place made of ice would have to suffice
In hopes of keeping me upright.

My home is a fortress built to protect
Sure ice is cold, but I find it’s strong when I inspect.
The construction began without hesitation
But my home’s security required a certain location.

Surely a ray of sun would leave me in ruins
So I fled the light and gave the darkness my union.
I lived there for years blind and stupid,
But happy enough to ignore what was quite convoluted.

In building my home I forgot one simple thing
Without light, deconstruction could prove to be rather trying
There was no sunshine to melt the walls
And I was forced, day by day, to break away at it all.

Now I’m left homeless with no defense
Trying to find a strong material that will still easily decondense.
To my astonishment the ice wasn’t the problem
In fact, it was something I’d almost entirely forgotten.

A home is never a house with four walls
But where we hide, shine, and live through it all.
It’s the place in our minds where we build our defenses
But not often without neglect to our other senses.

Human

Human

we are all
Human.
But,
what does that mean?

It means…

we are all
Beautiful.
yes,
in our own ways.

we are all
Different.
though,
not as different as we my hope.

we are all
Lovers.
both to
give and receive.

we are all
Fighters.
even if,
the only battle we ever engage,
is with ourselves.

we are all
Addicts.
with entirely too much
but, of course,
never enough.

we are all
Victims.
If,
at the very least,
by our own hand.

we are all
Human.
But,
what good does that do,
when being human
means being ugly too?

we are all
Human.
ready to Deceive.
quick to protect what we want
but,
almost never what we need.

we are all
Human.
jumping to Judge.
ready to hang others
with a noose we tied
for ourselves.

we are all
Human.
willing to Cheat.
if it puts us ahead
in a time of defeat.

we are all
Human.
undoubtedly Blind.
selfish because,
we possess only one set of eyes.

we are all
Human.
Have you figured out
what it means?

To be a good human, you must be less human it seems.

Illusions

Illusions
Keelinn Laskaris

I do not belong to you.
You do not belong to me.
We don’t belong to each other.
We coexist. We live side by side.

But,
What if I told you—
Your possessions don’t belong to you.
Your memories don’t either.
Your life is yours to have but not to keep.

We belong the earth;
To the world that created us.
To where we will return—
Without each other...
Without a memory...
