A Nation Cries Out

Shed blood, protection of innocence, a badge of honor
An oath was made
Defense of liberties and freedoms
Restrictions placed, standards no more
Chaos and anarchy knock at our doors
Forlorn morals; a time forgotten
Democracy is dead, the people have no voice
Gray haired remnants, so few remain
Fountains of wisdom, knowledge to share
It is all in vain, no one is listening
Mistakes were made, but the lessons not learned
Reconstitution of respect and values; a greater sense of self
Selflessness, humility, virtue, honesty
Lost treasures of a not so long-ago time
Preponderance screams unity and love behind a wall of illiberality
A nation cries out with a dying breath- look back, look back
Whispers of the past; forecasts for the future
Take heed, listen, look back and learn
It is not too late, it is not too late
Evoke change, recall decency, imbue integrity, inculcate charity-love’s truest form

I utilized a free verse method. I changed some of my phrasing and took a more narrative approach. I am still a bit of a novice when it comes to specific technique and styles. I also used the assistance of a dictionary and thesaurus to find words that formed a stronger meaning and evoked deeper contemplation. I haven’t written anything of this caliber in a very long time. I encourage and look forward to constructive criticism.

A Flag Is Flying

From my desk at work I can see, outside there are trees and a flag that is flying for all to see.
Do they understand; will they ever truly know what makes that flag so grand?
It was an ideal placed in the heart of men; of virtue, love, and faith- to lead us to the future and remind us of where we have been.
Red is for hardiness and valor; the blood of men and women who, for a belief, died with bravery.
White is for purity and innocence- the protection of those who wish to be free from tyranny’s vengeance.
Blue is for vigilance, perseverance, and justice- Taking a stand for our country and fellow man no matter the cost.
The stars represent the heavens- the splendor and majesty of God, and his love for all mankind- his greatest creation.
From my desk at work I can see, outside there are trees and a flag that is flying for all the world to see.

Wasted Life

Fountain of knowledge, once I drank from you
Once, I yearned for you
Drinking in your sweet essence
Once….

Stolen youth led to adolescent rebellion
Neglecting the fountain
Dry, barren, void
Wandering….

The fountain calls to me
Brief encounters to refresh my soul
Too much time spent in the desert
Struggling….

Half a lifetime wasted
Half a lifetime searching
Barely a remnant left
Too long from the fountain I strayed
Despairing….

I call to the fountain
Longing to quench the scorched remains
Afraid, unsure, trapped
Fighting….

Fountain of knowledge, once I drank from you
Once, I yearned for you
Drinking in your sweet essence
Once….
