The Azalea City Is My Hometown

I come from Valdosta, Georgia, the lovely peach state,
Where everyone uses a southern drawl to communicate.
Valdosta is known as the “Azalea City” for its gorgeous flowers.
In the spring this splendid sight has a captivating power.

I’m afraid the azaleas are forgotten by the summer,
When it gets so hot we are running for cover.
When we have a storm, I pray the electricity doesn’t go out.
In Valdosta, having the ac cranked is what it’s all about!

I grew up the daughter of a Pentecostal minister.
There are four siblings, including Barbara, my twin sister.
We went to church faithfully three times a week,
Sitting on the pew trying not to make a peep.

We may have grumbled about getting so much religion,
But down the road it has helped us all make decisions.
My Dad has now gone for his reward in Heaven.
I wish I could hear one more of his sermons God-given.

In high school my twin and I were members of a championship band.
We won so many contests, the Marching Cats was the best in the land.
The famous band director in Valdosta was the amazing Frank Butenschon.
His talent and dedication made us all winners, and we shined!

My best band competition memory was as good as it gets.
We won, and performed a half-time show for the Miami Dolphins and Jets.
The other piccolos and I marched out for a solo in front of the crowd.
That’s when they cut to commercial at home for my parents so proud!

To move along, fresh out of college I married a man 15 years older.
I was naïve and mesmerized, he was so much bolder.
We moved to Houston, where I taught high school.
Life was exciting, and being a newlywed was so cool.

Several years later we moved to New Hampshire, his home state.
The mountains, the snow, and especially the summers were great.
We opened a business that lasted for 25 years.
I was company President while we were entrepreneurs.

In NH for 20 years I was a member of the Upper Valley Community Band,
Playing my flute and piccolo for parades and summer concerts so grand.
We also played at Faneuil Hall, Germany, Austria, and France on tour.
Carole Blake, the renowned band director, put us on the map for sure!

After thirty years being man and wife, our marriage hit the rocks.
I moved back to Valdosta, where my family is mere blocks.
In my hometown, what others think of me does not keep me up at night.
I’m enjoying my freedom, and God has me in His sights.

Mother Nature Misbehaves

An ill wind blows this hurricane Sandy ashore,
Making everyone wonder just what is in store.
The full moon will amplify the already large waves,
And Mother Nature in her glory will misbehave.

In a mega storm people will come together,
Knowing God is in control, including the weather.
It is a reminder that life is like a grain of sand.
And for our eternity, we have to plan.

Being Single Has Its Perks

I was a good wife that kept a spotless house,
And cooked good food each day for my dear spouse.
When he mowed the lawn in the summer heat,
I would bring him a cool drink, just to be sweet.

After thirty years we have parted ways.
Now I have a new trail in which to blaze.
I’m finding out that being single has its perks.
I’m in charge now, and that’s how it works!

I don’t have to clean the house if I’m not inclined,
Or cook every day, working off my behind!
I can go out to dinner whenever I choose.
I don’t have to watch a man on the couch snooze!

I can run around the house naked as a jaybird,
And go without makeup, which in the heat is preferred.
Yes, the single life has given me a taste of freedom.
My new motto in life is “love ‘em and leave ‘em.”

Perseverance

The trees bent and whispered to me
As the leaves began to cry in harmony.
The trees were under attack by the brutal wind.
The sky looked as if judgement was about to descend.

I stood transfixed at nature’s display of fury.
But the trees held their ground, in all their glory.
Perseverant and majestic, trees are God’s finest creation.
They give simple beauty, hope, and never-ending inspiration.

My Guilty Pleasure

I just did a bad thing.
But oh, what delight it did bring!
I was in my car going down the street,
When I had a craving for something to eat.

A Big Mac and fries were calling my name.
I abandoned my diet… I had no shame!
I don’t regret my guilty pleasure at all.
I’ll diet tomorrow after my fast food fall!

Why Do People Go To Church

Some attend church to be seen, and wear their new clothes,
While others sit on their pew and silently doze.
During the service a few will check their cell phone,
With messages they just can’t seem to postpone.

Some men darken the church door out of fear,
Because if they don’t their spouse won’t let them near.
There are those that go to church because it is fun,
They like to see their friends, and talk to everyone.

Music lovers go to church because they love to sing,
And others wait for the sermon the preacher will bring.
Whatever your reason, God is watching from above.
He knows your true heart, and is full of love.

Peace Be Still

“Peace, be still!” he said to the furious wind and waves.
Then the storm became a whisper, and the sea obeyed.
"What manner of man is this?" the disciples said in awe.
His name was Jesus- Master, Savior, and Son of God.

Take Me To a Football Game

Take me to a football game,
For a hot dog and beer kind of date.
When our team scores, I will loudly exclaim,
For a play that was so exciting and great!

When they win the band will loudly play,
And we will scream like lunatics in the stands.
With a victory dance to end the day,
We will proudly leave hand in hand.

Money From Heaven

My father-in-law, Frank was a man that loved to shop,
We were two peas in a pod, we shopped til we dropped.
One spring day we decided to shop out of town,
We shopped best without my husband around.

We left my husband happily on his tractor on our land,
Then set off for a shopping day oh so grand!
The sun was shining, and we had Sinatra for the ride.
We couldn’t have picked a better day if we had tried!

We had lunch and then shopped in all the stores,
Happy we weren’t at home stuck doing the chores.
We started to get tired and decided to leave.
Then walked outside to a sight we couldn’t believe.

It was a mini tornado and not a soul to be found,
But the strangest thing was the money blowing around.
Money was falling from the sky, and our hands and feet were flying.
It was like a dream… catching the money was intensely gratifying.

We informed the store about the cash from above,
Then counted the money in the car we were so undeserving of.
A man knocked on the window when we were counting the dough,
It was about seventy-five bucks the wind fortuitously bestowed.

The man said to Frank, “ Oh sir you forgot one,” and handed him a five.
Frank took the five, said “God bless you,”…and I wanted to hide.
Later my husband scolded, “You should have given him the five, it wasn’t yours to keep!”
Frank replied, “What the hell, it wasn’t his either, God dropped it at my feet!”
