A Dance

Now I watch close the shades of red and white
Falling on windows facing each other
mixing thoughts with a far older brother
one who for far longer danced in light
he rises, and rises, giving the sight
to world-weary eyes, long bereft of peace,
from what dark corner he has found release
that he should revel so in blinding light.

For now he will fade, recede, and return
rest his tired soul, his brothers have now thought
and danced enough at a steady burn,
as for his coming, going, we know naught,
only that his grace we will never earn
that light, and thought, and love is sweetly bought.

My Car, My House

My car, my crappy house, the job I loathe
and clothes I wear, the girl I say I love
and rarely really speak to; fitted glove
that deadens all my senses, all I loathe
and praise at once is part of living, most
of all my woman, jailer, savior, saint.
I own her, yet she owns me. Could I paint
a breathing body-not this quiet host.

An Election

All the lights in the city are dark
and the trees of the forest are bare,
we are left with as empty a chair

As could be leading. Here, an ark,

In a country of seekers, of green.
so now morning is coming to light
And we spoke to the blackness of night.

We hope to stay asleep and dream.

City By the River

In this city by the river
Full of mud and grass, stone and flesh,
Chests stay still without a shiver
And roses make us appear fresh,

I rode far, saw many wonders,
Felt love for a beautiful girl
Who loved me despite my blunders,
Then all was taken in a twirl,

By hunger he was so driven
Still, to me he's unforgiven,
Now I rest beside the givers,
In this city by the river.

Your Hair Was Hanging Down Your Back

Your hair was hanging down your back and hid
your shoulders, tumbling waves and rays of sun.
I kiss your pale and gleaming shoulder bid
with gold, the purest action ever done.
You looked as far as eyes can see across
the field and river, sighed against my chest
and then I heard you laugh and saw you toss
your head for love of fingers on your breast,
your eyes, my essence, stared at mine, I fear
the separation, ending what can say
my soul in words, I treasure, hold so dear
your voice, your giggle, tussled hair that may
have freedom streaking yellow, black throughout
the strands, their promise never will I doubt.

Oak Tree Alone In a Field

In a field a tall oak tree has stood,
grass and yellow leaves lay at its base
though away, a small distant grey wood
stands behind the tree, without a face,

Though alone it seems the stronger frame
for the tree is first to feel the sun,
but perhaps it's all in here the same
when it all at last is said and done,

For the tree is first to face the rain,
winds and storms, the snow and ice it feels
still it stands a fearsome, wiser gain
with a nameless though a steady keel,

In a field a tall oak tree has stood,
time and time it stands, it stays alone
though away, a small distant grey wood
waits to show the tree how much it's grown.

Mine

Give me broken things,
leave me all your shattered thoughts,
your chaos is mine.

A Field of Wheat

The road beneath my bare and swollen feet
is winding forever; and stopping near
a barren wood I saw a field of wheat
with streams upon the northern clearing, here
I turned and together with all my heart
I say and give to hardened roads my part.

A Clearing In the Woods

I stopped by a clearing in darkened woods
to watch the sun come through the opening
the forest made, a shining light of good
in this a glade, so quiet, wakening
a question, why a small and silent way
no different than others, earns its pay.

Be Among My Many Lives

Do not allow your beauty, fair as snow,
to go to waste, I love and grasp your hand
in mine, I'll not release it. Now I'll row
against the tides and currents time can land
upon us. Be among my many lives
I carry during struggles coming soon.
I'll hear your sobs and worries, soothe your cries
and never let a day go by in gloom.
Our children raised with care and holy grace.
Or barren we will be and just your love
I'll seek and sing, I'll gaze upon your face.
Our house will fit our spirits tight as gloves,
and in that house our true, our real, our home
will never move, our souls always to roam.
