Whispered Into the Air

I admire the tree in silence.
The way it clings to the rock
And works its way down into the river
Down into the earth.
I think about the knowledge of man.
All the things that men have told me
about the tree – about botany or biology.
They have said this
They have said that
Words whispered into the air and gone in time.
Knowledge is worthless in comparison to beauty
This tree is magnificent
And that is enough for me.

The Deaf and Passionless Leaves

I remember it so clearly,
The first time I saw you.
You said you loved my aviators.

Our meeting was so ordinary,
And having nothing witty to say
I just asked your name
Standing in that long driveway.

Who would have thought
Two years later
I would be whispering your name
To the deaf and passionless leaves
Just trying to ease the pressure
On my shackled, poem-filled, heart.

Focusing each minute you're near
On the propinquity of the irresistible.
Everything about you draws me,
And I am always pushing back
Against that ever present urge
To fall in love with you.

This Violence

What place has gentleness
In a world like this?
What place has innocence?

If you find it don't tell me.

Don't tell anyone
Keep it a secret.
For I live in a world
That only knows violence
And I suspect deep down
This violence infects me too.

Young Flower Haiku

You lie on God's bed,
Which is a soft grassy field,
A sweet young flower.

There Are Two Kinds of Evil Men

There are two kinds of evil men,
There are two kinds of men,
There are the evil men who think they do good,
And the evil men who know they do evil,
I am Cain who killed Abel.

Pleasure Before Truth

If they had to choose,
People would die for pleasure
Before they would die for truth.
But I,
I would die for you.

A Woman Who Sits Upon the Mountain

I wait for a woman
Who has the heart of Li Qing Zhao.
Do I wait in vain?
A woman who sits upon the mountain
Just to watch the cherry blossoms bloom,
A woman who finds the greatest pleasure in life,
Drinking wine and drinking poetry
Hours into the night.

What Is the Greatness of Man

Man,
The self proclaimed genius,
Figuring out the best way to build a campfire,
And then announcing to the stars
That he is on equal footing with the gods.

Valette

Jean and I share
The same vision
The same king.
I don't know if old age
Or a family will be granted me,
Or if my heart will pour out on the ground
In the great clash
Which will soon be upon us once again.

Lost In the Mountains

Long drive home
Lost in the mountains
Everyone in the car is irritable
But I don't mind.
I wish they'd drop me off
On the side of the road
So I could watch the rain
Coming in over the smokey hills
