Open Our Eyes

Bend down from your perch so high
Touch the Earth and open your eyes
Choked with concrete and steel
Death is a certainty and finality real
Overpopulation and destruction rampant
Consumption and spoil is a constant
Obsession for possession of power
While the lowly crouch and cower
Repetition to the closed in mind
Revelations they will never find
The hopelessness of the human condition
As they race headlong into perdition
Could be reversed by a simple deed
If we would but fervently heed
Bend down from our perch so high
Touch the Earth and open our eyes.

Wrong Or Right

What is right and what is wrong
So much gray and so many songs
Just because I can does it mean that I should?
If I appear pleasant then should I be rude?
There are many such questions to ponder in life
So many in fact that it causes us strife.
I wonder sometimes if what I know is right
Is somehow considered wrong in another’s sight.
My upbringing taught me to be gentle and kind
To help others when I see they are in a bind.
To be fair and just in all my various dealings
And to always be considerate of others’ feelings
To always do a day’s work for a day’s pay.
When the sun is shining you got to make hay.
But some other folks don’t see it the same
The rules are some different in life’s game
They are taught to lie and encouraged to steal
That dying is holy and it’s alright to kill.
Some worship cattle and won’t eat beef
Pierce their faces and wear sandals on their feet
I ain’t saying that they are wrong or right
And I ain’t saying that we should go and fight
What I am saying is it ain’t right for me
And I wish these folks would let me be
I think “do unto others” is a mighty good rule
And I stay away from folks that I think are a fool
Respect is earned by respecting others
And I just wish we could all be brothers.

Greatness

Why do we presume to be so great
When we hasten so to tempt our fate
Are our souls so in need of danger
Starting thus while in the manger
Bullet proof and over ten feet tall
Flying way before we can crawl
Drawn always to a brilliant light
Oblivious to our perilous plight
We run and rage on every page
Never heeding the advice of sage
Charging headlong into the wind
Pausing briefly only to append
If this thing I could understand
Maybe my life I could amend
This longing for freedom perchance
Could this cause such a dance
Maybe we can truly be this great
If we can only redirect out fate.

Listen Shhhhhh

IF YOUR VERY VERY QUIET
AND VERY VERY STILL
YOU CAN HEAR HIM TALKING
AND KNOW THAT HE IS REAL

WHISPERING THROUGH THE TREES
AND THE SONGS OF THE BIRDS
CHIRPING OF THE CRICKETS
MOVEMENT OF THE HERD

THE RUSTLING OF GRASS
SOFTLY PUSHED ASIDE
BY FEET STEPPING QUIETLY
PAUSING WHILE IN STRIDE

A MARE SOFTLY COAXING
A PRECIOUS NEWBORN FOAL
THE CREATION OF LIFE
WARMS YOU TO YOUR SOUL

IF YOU LISTEN YOU CAN HEAR
YOUR HEART SLOWLY BEATING
COUNTING OUT THE SECONDS
OF YOUR SHORT LIFE FLEETING

JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN
TO ALL THE THINGS YOU MISS
WORRYING ABOUT DAY TO DAY
TOO LONG IS YOUR LIST

LISTEN TO WHAT IS IMPORTANT
LIFE GOES ON ALL AROUND
THINK NOW WHAT YOU’RE HEARING
AND THE TREASURES YOU FOUND

SO IF YOU’RE VERY VERY QUIET
AND VERY VERY STILL
YOU’LL KNOW WHO IS TALKING
AND KNOW THAT GOD IS REAL

Phattest Gun In Town

A WAY OUT WEST PHATT IS GOOD
AND BLING-BLING IS FANCY STUFF
THEM COWBOYS THERE DRESS REAL FINE
CAUSE THE WORK OUT THERE AINT ROUGH

I WENT OUT WEST TO SEE THE SIGHTS
AND LORDY THEY WAS FINE
COWBOYS THERE RIDE IN LIMOSENES
THEM COWBOYS THERE DRINK WINE

I MET UP WITH THIS FANCY COWBOY
DOWNTOWN ON RODEO DRIVE
HE HAD A PRETTY GIRL ON EACH ARM
AND BROTHER THEY WAS FINE

HIS HAT HE SAID WAS MADE OF FAUX
IT LOOKED LIKE RABBIT FUR TO ME
THE HATBAND WAS COVERED WITH DIAMONDS
AND PEACOCK FEATHERS FANCY AS COULD BE

HE’S THE PHATTEST GUN IN TOWN
HE’S THE PHATTEST GUN IN TOWN
BLING-BLING FROM HIS HEAD TO HIS TOES
HE’S THE PHATTEST GUN IN TOWN

HIS SHIRT WAS MADE OF JAPAN SILK
WITH BUTTONS MADE OF PEARLS
HE WORE A FANCY GOLDEN BUCKLE
THAT SAID MY NAME IS EARLE

HE WORE TWO PEARL HANDLED PISTOLS
SLUNG DOWN LOW ON HIS WAIST
ONE WAS A FANCY CIGAR LIGHTER
THE OTHER HOLDS BRANDY JUST A TASTE

CHORUS

HE SAID HEY BRO YOUR NEW IN TOWN
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A DATE
THESE GIRLS WILL SHOW YOU A REAL GOOD TIME
GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM AND WAIT

I LOOKED AT HIM AND THEN AT THEM
AND THEN I JUST SAID NO
MY WIFE IS WAITIN’ BACK AT THE RANCH
AND I REALLY GOT TO GO

CHORUS

When the Dogwood Is In Bloom

WHEN THE DOGWOOD IS IN BLOOM AND THE RANGE HAS TURNED TO GREEN
I WILL RIDE YOUR WAY AGAIN LIKE THE HAPPY VISION IN YOUR DREAM.
WITH THE SUN SHINING ON MY BACK ON THE TRAIL LEADING TO YOUR DOOR
I WILL COME BACK TO YOU ALWAYS IN YOUR HAPPY MEMORIES AS BEFORE.

YOU REMEMBER HOW I WORE MY HAT? SLIGHTLY TILTED TO THE SIDE?
AND HOW I ALWAYS SAT TALL IN THE SADDLE WHENEVER I WOULD RIDE?
I COULD SEE YOU WAITING THERE AND I WOULD SIT TALLER THAN A KING
MY PRIDE WOULD SWELL AND I HAD TO SMILE KNOWING YOU WORE MY RING.

WE SWAM IN THAT LITTLE BLUE HOLE BENEATH THE COTTONWOOD TREES
THEN LAY ON A BLANKET STARING AT THE STARS IN LOVE YOU AND ME.
THE HOURS WOULD PASS LIKE MINUTES AS YOU LAY THERE IN MY ARMS
I THANK GOD EACH AND EVERY DAY YOU GRACED ME WITH YOUR CHARMS.

WE TOOK LONG WALKS HAND IN HAND THROUGH THE FIELDS OF WILD FLOWERS
CHASING COTTONTAIL RABBITS AND RED SQUIRRELS TO THEIR HIGH TOWERS.
WE PUT UP THE CORN IN THE SUMMER AND GATHERED PECANS IN THE FALL
LIFE WITH YOU MY DARLING WAS WONDERFUL AS I ALWAYS WILL RECALL

DON’T WEEP FOR ME BUT REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES THAT WE HAD TOGETHER
AND RECALL WHEN WE WALKED HAND IN HAND IT WAS ALWAYS FINE WEATHER
SO PUT ON MY COAT AND SIT ON THE PORCH AND CLOSE YOUR PRETTY EYES
I’LL COME RIDING TO YOU WHENEVER YOU WISH JUST WATCH OVER THE RISE.
