Rain my enemy,
To the universe a friend
I cry with the sky

Debbie Martinez Poem
Shores
Walking on the shore of loneliness
Comfortable I sink my toes into the sands of life
And feel its time squeeze through these toes.
Behind me I can see the footprints left
Now a single pair, marking the moist sand midst
Pieces of polished glass and shells of my pain
Smoothed by sand’s force to etch the edges’
Sharp piercing power.
I look to the future watching
The sun’s warmth dip
Into the sea of gradual darkness.
Then you, a wild wave crashes overhead
Enveloping me in your power
Swirling the sand away beneath me
Sweeping me from my valiant stance
Sucking me under into your passion’s tide.
Picking up long buried sharp shards of brokenness
You pierce my vulnerability and I wash to the shore
Exposed and panting for air.

Debbie Martinez Poem
Bring back those
coloring book pages
Where good girls color
between the lines.
Simple pictures applying
one color at a time
With single dimensions.
Put the artist of my soul
that has been awakened
Back to sleep...
Where lines are blurred
with color and light.
Broad strokes of ecstasy
Tiny, infinite impressions
of gentle hues
Swirl and blend
a masterpiece that
Will only be placed on the
canvas of my heart.

Debbie Martinez Poem
Starry Starry Night
It was a crystal clear night when one
By nocturnal watch lies gazing into the darkness
The eternal endless expanse brought to life by stellar light.
Stars so close that one could capture its brilliance
Reaching, grasping, touching
Hands extended to keep one forever.
Through this glorious sea of galactic beauty
The gazer finds what he is searching for,
The collimation of sight aligning his future
One distant, tiny twinkle,
An apparition eclipsed by others,
Falls through the night into his universe.
He closes his eyes and makes a wish.

Debbie Martinez Poem
Sky Fall
The sky cries with me today….
I am drowning in Alice’s salty pool
Feeling far too small in a big world
That has engulfed me with its injustice.
The warmth of my tears
Doesn't temper the windy chill
That hails across my course
But burns with bitterness.
Let my rain replenish
With showers of hope
That through this desolate place
May run a renewing stream.

Debbie Martinez Poem
My Simple Pleasures
With a sweeping of colors,
l can imagine places in my mind
And display a world of imagination
Converted to canvas
With my hand like a wave brushing fantasy into reality.
And as I turn the pages of another author's soul
I can interchange my world with wonderment
Of someone else’s hand creating art with words.
And I am lost once again
Listening to the sweet sounds of melody
Waving through the air
Competing with the finches and the mockingjay
Replicating the notes and connecting the lines
Of times gone by.
And I am lost in the sweet sensation of
Two best friends, Ben and Jerry
Who entertain my pallette with a
Fudgy, salty, sweet and creamy delight
That can only be attacked by a spoon
Hopefully in more than one sitting
Unless it has been a bad day
Or it’s raining outside
Or it’s just Tuesday.
And when it's Saturday
I love to stretch out and sit
With my sweet Chubby Hubby
Handing over the remote to his control
And watch an hour or two of someone else’s
Fictional life unfolding before me
While the room fills with the lingering aroma
Of the tiny kernels in my bowl
That have burst into this addiction
Hot and buttery
And better when shared with my best friend.

Debbie Martinez Poem
How does one capture a heart?
Is it an instantaneous moment of seizure
Ensnared by a singularly magical minute
A spell cast
In a twinkling of time
With just
One
Touch?
How does one capture a heart?
Is it trapped in time
By a gentle coaxing,
A trust
Taking it apart piece by piece
Until it is given away
Without
Reluctance?

Debbie Martinez Poem
NO LONGER
You no longer own me.
I am no longer a slave to your words
that held me shackled
behind these invisible prison bars.
I have changed the lock
to the key you carried for so long,
warden of my emotions.
I am no longer bound
by your life sentence of unworthiness.
Your gavel of judgement has been silenced.
I can squint at the light
flooding my chambers of darkness,
walk the halls of the past
Past the mental cages.
To newfound freedom
