In God We Trust

While on my way to Church one Sunday morning
Along the road I saw a car broke down
I stopped to see if I could help the driver
And he said I sure could use a ride to town

While riding into town just making small talk
He saw my Bible laying on the seat
He said that's one book there I don't believe in
Then he said these frightening words to me

I really don't believe in God or Heaven
And I don't think there really is a Hell
Then I said you need to listen to this story
This old country boys about to tell

Every time you reach into your pocket
And you pull out a bill to pay the man
You need to read what's printed on that dollar
Cause the words In God we Trust are in your hand

Then I reached downed on the seat and got my Bible
And I held it out and put it in his hand
I said my Mother gave this book to me some time ago
Then she said son, someday give to a friend

Then we rode off into town and not a single word was said
I dropped him off, I shook his hand, he just nodded his head
Then I went on to Church and as I heard those Church bells sound
I knew someday, somehow, someway this lost soul would be found

Then the days turned into weeks and the months turned into years
And his path and mine would never cross again
Then just the other evening, a knock came at my door
There a young man stood with a Bible in his hand

He said, sir you don't know me
But you once knew my Dad
And this Bible I am holding
Is the one that you once had

He said about twenty years age
His car broke down
And you picked him up along the road
And drove him into town

He said you held this Bible out
And put it in his hand
He said you said some words to him
He said you called him friend

This morning, I've lost track of time
I guess about six or seven
My father looked at me and smiled
Then the Lord took him to heaven

But the other day, he said son
The day that my life ends
Take this book home where it belongs
And give to my friend

When he handed me the Bible
Not a single word he'd say
I shook his hand, he smiled at me
Then he turned and walked away

When I opened up the Bible
It was then I'd understand
Cause he had written on the cover
In God we Trust is in our hands

Carry On

When the pressures of life bring on sadness
And you're lonely and feeling withdrawn
And your life doesn't seem like it's worth it
Well believe me it is, carry on

We are each given life for a reason
It's a God given gift from beyond
The choice is not ours, when it's over
So don't ever give up, carry on

If you think giving up is the answer
And the pain and frustrations too strong
Believe me my friend, you have the strenght from within
Just pick yourself up, carry on

There were times in my life filled with heartache
Nights so dark, never thought I'd see dawn
Then a voice from within said don't ever give in
Better days days are ahead, carry on

When my time here on Earth is completed
And the breath in my body is gone
Then I'll lay down and rest for the last time
But until then I'll just carry on

That Old Rocking Chair

See that old rocking chair in the corner
Made of nothing but wood, nails, and glue
My Grandfather made it for Grandma
Back when their marriage was new

It's where she rocked her all her babies
Prayed and sang sweet lullabies
It's where Grandpa set by the edge of her bed
On the night he told Grandma goodbye

It's where Grandpa would set and tell stories
All us kids gathered round at his feet
And the stories were all about Grandma
And how she made his whole life complete

When my Grandpa passed on
The chair was passed dowm
To my Mother and then on to me
Now it sets over there in the corner for my family and friends to all see

Sometimes late at night when it's quiet
I think I see that old chair move
I know it's just Grandma or Grandpa
In that chair made of wood, nails, and glue

If I Could Just Go Back

If I could just go back in time
To a place in my life that was so sublime
My Grandfather's farm on a warm summer day
The sweet smell of lilacs and fresh cut hay

If I could just go back in time
The smell of fresh laundry out on the line
Blackberry cobbler and fresh baked bread
Homemade ice cream and before we went to bed

If I could just go back in time
The taste of fresh strawberries right off the vine
Cat Hollow creek, that big swimming hole
Me and my brothers and our old cane poles

If I could just go back in time
To a place in my life that was just yours and mine
A small southern Chapel
the vows that we say
My beautiful wife on our wedding day

If Icould just go back in time
To the joy and happiness I left behind
If just for a moment, I'd give my last dime
If I could just go back in time

Heroes

The labor day weekend was over
Another school year had begun
But what happened next
We will never forget
Nine Eleven Two Thousand and One

They started their day like always
Hugged their families and told them goodbye
But they didn't know
How far those words would go
And how that night, their families would cry

New Yorks's finest ran towards the Twin Towers
While most people were running away
Helping strangers and friends
Knowing their life might end
But that's just the price real heroes pay

While those cowards were boarding the airplanes
Thank God heroes were boarding them too
But cowards don't know
How far heroes will go
To save people just like me and you

So remember when telling this story
To your own children's daughters and sons
Tell the price heroes paid
On that late Summer day
Nine Eleven Two Thousand and One

When the World Closes In

When the world closes in all around you
And your friends are no where to be found
And the feelings inside, that you're trying to hide
Makes you feel your whole worlds coming down

No one said it was going to be easy
And that life wouldn't come with some rain
No one said you would always be happy
No one said there would never be pain

But there's light at the end of the tunnel
And a rainbow can't come without rain
And nights always darkest, just before dawn
And true happiness cames with some pain

Mom

The year was nineteen fifty
The century half gone
The first time that I met her
The lady I call Mom

My sister just turned two years old
About six months before
And they said the way she loved us two
There would probably be more

Well they were right
Two brothers first
Two sisters joined us too
Mom said that six was quite enough
Won't be no more, I'm through

But life's not always easy
She raised us all alone
I never once heard her complain
She gave us all a home

Now the Autumn of her life has come
And for us she's still there
To help us trough the hard times
And to show us she still cares

When her time on Earth is over
And her days with us are gone
Lord, give my share of heaven
To the lady I call Mom

Gods Plan

I've been many places since the day that I was born
Seen lots of things I just don't understand
Like why a man named Oswald did the things he did
And why they didn't finish things in Vietnam

Why Martin Luther Kings no longer with us
Just because the color of his skin
And Elvis Presley too, passed on at forty two
Wish I could hear him sing "My Way" again

And now the say that prayer's' no longer welcome in our schools
They cast the Lord outside and closed the door
But let me tell you friend, he walked back in again
And I hope those kids are praying even more

Then Nine Eleven came to this great nation
And we saw things we couldn't comprehend
Now they have a fight, we will make all their wrongs right
And this great nation will be standing in the end

I pledge allegiance to the flag, one nation under God
That's one more right they want to take away
But we have the right to choose, and without that right we lose
And I choose to wave "Old Glory" everyday

If you believe that we are not one nation under God
There is one thing you better understand
That everything you see including you and me
Are all part of the thing we call God's plan

Four Letter Word

It's just a small four letter word
With a meaning oh so deep
You can feel it when your wide awake
Or when your sound asleep

Sometimes it makes you jump for joy
Sometimes it makes you sad
You can feel it when a baby's born
Or for your Mom and Dad

For your brothers and your sisters
For that old dog in the yard
For your Grandma and your Grandpa
When you get a birthday card

For that person standing by your side
On the day you say I do
For the children that you have in life
It turns cloudy skies to blue

I can't explain just what it means
Must have come from up above
It's just a small four letter word
That we all know as "Love"

The Game of Life

In the game of life we play
The cards that's in our hand
There not always what we hoped
Not always what we planned

But don't give up, just play it out
and do the best you can
Cause in the game of life we play
Your dealt another hand

Sometimes life seems so unfair
And sometimes seems so unkind
But someday, somewhere,out there
True happiness you'll find

The rain will stop, the skies will clear
And then you'll understand
That in the game of life
Your dealt the winning hand
