For Those Who Flew

When winter winds did blow
Across the clouds, so many years ago,
And she, as green as leaves
Before they fell to Earth
Who picked them up
As something else again.

Before the flowers bloomed
On trees so ready for the spring
The efflorescent sun
Could sternly see
The tick-tick-tick
Of that which went
And swept them all away again.

She, who jumped and ran
(And such) could think
But how the tick-tick-tick
Would watch her go
And slowly smile and hide his teeth
He'd lie in wait
Before he'd show himself to her again.

And as he moved her on
She found her wings and flew
And kissed the sky, the sun of which
Would smile, but the tick-tick-tick
Would call her back
(She would obey)
Desire floating through her heart
And he would laugh again.

And down she'd come
To fight him off;
To hold him close;
For through the bars the lark wouldn't sing
And in the cage she wept and fought
To call him back again.
