A Bend In the Road

Whispers in the breeze,

frozen stiff around a bend-

life came to an end.

If just there was enough,

if just.

The quiet still of the dead,

coagulated blood on your head...

You sped away to get away...

farther than you ever meant.

Now a little face dwells

      pensive

      confused.

Heavy chin resting on his fist,

weary eyes covered wet with woe.

In the late October breeze

he tries to catch a whisper of his dad...

calling him to sleep,

for one last time again.

Life long they will pass your final act.

A dent in the old oak tree,

where in a flash-

they lost everything.

My heart it weeps.

              It could be you

 or me.

Nason Hill Road

The rooms are bright white,
empty square chambers.
With memories stale in the air.
The creeping echo of your voice.

Glossy refinished pine floors,
swimming in polyurethane.
Done new for someone new,
who can never appreciate our time here.

Hollow except the single bed,
so inviting to lay my head.
Feel the thick, crisp comforter warm me,
and the lumpy mattress envelope me.
Hold me in its lumps, molding into me.

The lone lamp on the oak nightstand,
lit dim, a solitary candle.
Alone.
Never to see you in this house again.
To not feel love,
nor hear the laughter I long for.

When once you knocked on my door for guidance...
curious and naive.
Now you are grown and strong...a Marine.

Still, I see the boy in your face,
the innocent, blushing child I grew with.
To return a man,
if to return at all.

Walking through the hallways,
the sun hazes your ghostly figure.
One,
without.

Never to wake careless at noon.
Never to touch these creaky floors with my bare feet.

The growing,
our wonder years.
All the fighting screams.
The energy...
        But mostly you.

And when you left me brother- so did this place.

Where will I go to find you...if you never return?

Stuck

Where’s my inspiration?
Love, loss, pain- aspiration?
Nothing here but mundane,
Turning circles blinded.

Longing for yesterday in tomorrow,
Ignorant and pompous.

Thinking thoughtless, running careless.
Forgetting where my place is.

In today-forever now.
A rote route, no destination.
I rust and wear, age and lose. At here-in place-forever?

New England Winter

I tap my foot restless...
The snow continues to cover.
In a torrent- my torment.
Taking my sweet years with it.

As I age and forget.
With all that remains- I regret.

I retreat in my cave and curse the gray days.

A thief in the night, I awake…to an empty chamber- my heart.

I cannot take another New England winter. To face myself in the mirror.

Rising Above

I will never have
 -money, thick and green.
I will never know the looks,
dirty with envy and greed.
I will not walk empty, cold as stone- irreverent.

I will pain in thought,
cry solitarily.
I will live in love,
love in life- forever more.
My heart agape,
my mistakes iron heavy.

I will live life
the only way I know how.
After missing chances,
Regretting times
I will learn to rise, sky scraping high,
With pride.

Alone

Alone,
Again.
My thoughts- incessant.
I fight to find
Complete
In me.

To rest my head
No one upon.
I struggle
To see
The good
In me.

I cry
Blind tears.
The hate
I’ve stirred,
Inside of others,
I will never know.

So here
I stand
Embattled
Again.

Alone.

2 Am

The phone rang twice,
I fear the call at night.
When deep in sleep we dream...
awakened by a nightmare.

When everyone is at rest,
it is when we learn of death.
When tears stream down
and scraping in my gut,
When legs tremble and collapse.

Now the mornings when we wake,
open one eye as if afraid...
to see...haunting reality.
Instantly I cramp,
like being dealt a blow,
gasping for more air.

So please don't call me after dark,
even if just to talk.
I'll see the face of the brother that died
that cold, dark September night.

When Your Garden Dies

As the flowers wilt…

You think of the things you couldn’t give to me
When all I wanted was time

I look in your sunken blue eyes-
the years wasted hanging in the bags
And the wrinkles written in your pain

As you wait for your garden to die.
And I’ll say… “now, you see
this isn’t the way you pictured it would be.”
A painful death,
A slow goodbye.

And when your garden dies
They will all forget
What you meant.

But I never will and I will cry,
A million tears.
Forgiving all the times you didn’t care.

No one will water your flowers
No one will tend to your plants.
The bushes will overgrow
And the weeds will multiply.

There in the jumbled rainbow,
I will see you.
Roaming in your oasis…
Still here on earth.
Stuck…looking for the things you could never find.

All the riches in the world,
The countries far and wide…Turkey, Sweden, Germany…
It never was enough,
It never made you whole.

The family you built.
The struggles, the love…
It never found you.
It never made you one.

This is what you have always wanted...
Waiting to die.

Love Pass Me By

Tornado seasons turn.
Dusty memories put away-
Only to linger in my brain.
You could move.
Never to remember again,
whilst the pain lingers in my heart.

Still voices and glances,
Near and missed chances,
Gut wrenching thoughts never spoken.

Traversing twin roads-
I pass a minute too late, a minute too soon.
Electric energy glides through the air...
It is too much to bear.

My heart chips…
bits of not and never-
afraid to lose.

In a Bind

In every criminal there is a child -
With the face of your son,
The hands of your brother.

A mother held him once, she lulled him to sleep. When he cried she soothed him.

The weary heart that longs to forgive-
The marriage of family, it never desists.

I live in a sad state,
The anger retreats, but that is just me.
I can simple forgive but I cannot forget.
To do so would be foolish and fools are just that.
