Carlyn Parent Poem
First and Only
by Carlyn Parent
My heart tingles around the boy
in our middle school hallway,
inducing my body to a pleasant numbness.
My words stutter
the first time we innocently speak.
Time stops
when his soft, thin lips passionately meet mine.
Surely this is just puppy love…
My heart tingles around the young man
in our high school hallway,
inducing my body to a pleasant numbness.
My lips waver
when he smiles my direction.
My legs weaken
when our blue eyes connect.
He is my first love.

Carlyn Parent Poem
Grandpa
by carlyn parent
there he is
buried
beneath heavy stone
immersed
within cruel soil
i received warning
but could not
give enough
g o o d b y e s
angry tumors conspired
belittling his brain
tighthugs
sillysongs
wetkisses
gone

Carlyn Parent Poem
Game Over
by Carlyn Parent
Pac Man,
bright like a cartoon sun,
advances to level three.
Scooting his way through the flashing
entrance, he encounters a bundle of bananas.
Pac Man accepts
without knowledge of its dangers.
The initial fruit energy
is not enough to conquer
the ongoing maze.
Pac Man, too young for such perils,
becomes dizzy, bouncing off walls,
hurting himself and those around him.
The blue ghost attacks,
consuming Pac Man. Points are nonchalantly
subtracted from his already-short life.
The hypnotic game
would not occur if men learned
to refuse the bundle of bananas.
It is poisoned with alcohol.
