Mexican Meal

My lunch today? ...........It most Surely was a mistake
Which was it? .............Enchilada or Picado steak
Does it matter? ...........Only that I cant stay awake
What is it now? ............Find a place for a nap to take
Till when? .....................Patiently wait for the silence to break
Who is it? .....................Not the masters for my future's sake
What if..? .......................Hope that the whistle will cause me to wake
What then will it be? .... More productive work to fake

A Passing Fragrance

You will leave as you enter
A passing fragrance
Not unlike the breeze of midsummer

My wish to hold you here in vain
A silent touch
Not unlike the first warm bead of rain

Heart and mind with you will go
A stolen breath
Not unlike the oxygen for a fire's soul

It is not in you to return
A longful memory
Not unlike the tears falling on wounds that burn

Whispers On a Vine

When you turn your head to time
Do you listen to whispers on a vine?
Sounds that may mean no
Voices that tell you yes
A whistle when it is time to go

What are these whispers on a vine?
Are they strangers passing by?
Are you too afraid to ask them why?
Noises too noisy to hear
Your silence and quiet
Replaced by violence and riot

Who is it that whispers on a vine?
Your parents, brothers and sisters?
Friends, well wishers and keepers?
What do they whisper?
To do things, to loose things, to make things
Whispers that tell you
Of winning, defeating, choosing and loosing
How will you know when you are not listening?

Whatever the whisper whatever the vine
The effort to listen is neither yours nor mine
We who are walking, no, we who are stalking
Following behind the whispers found on a vine
We think we see where we go
We think we see where we’ve been
What is it to listen if we only have eyes?
How without hearing will we determine the lies?

Will you heed a whisper on a vine?
You may from a lover who shares your mind
But heed only whispers that you heed with your heart
It takes more than vision and it takes more than wishin
To think only of hearing will hardly afford a start
You require firm standing and hands at the ready
With whispers you must grasp and hold them quite steady
Finally you’ve caught one and now may ask it:

“oh whisper, that comes and goes, hold one moment,
for I seek answers no one yet knows. If you grant me this favor
I may still yet reward you. The single request I pray you,
whisper your whisper just a bit louder? ”

Fight

Fight!

You have fallen below the floor
Useless muscles and tendons swollen

Fight!

Demand your limits to give you more
Remove the weights and lay them broken

Fight!

Thoughts and visions left in chronic war
Your mind betrayed and heart forgotten

Fight!

Burden endured return to where you stood before
Destroy the traps and reclaim what was taken

Fight!

Bleeding hearts and shattered bones you must ignore
Raise your chest to yell and feel this land begin to shaken

Fight!

What You Are Made Of

No weeping for the apple that falls
In your hands, caress the fruit
Ponder the birth of life between your fingers
Call to the tree that was once a seedling
Hear how the seed descends from ancient orchards
Now find the distant gardens nurtured by a younger sun

With tender mouth peel away time and memory
Taste on your lips salt and wind from oceans
Smell on your skin desert sand and heat
Sate your thirst with the crisp chill of rain
Gaze here on nurturing hands that came before yours

You too have fallen to earth from the reach of history

I will not weep for you, my apple
In my hands I will hold you fast
Reveal infinite flavor and texture

I long for the delicacy of your origins
To see in your eyes, the boundless skies gazed by your ancestors
To feel in your arms, embraces given to countless children
To hear in your breath, kindred voices whisper their love
I dare to taste the tears of laughter that echo your name

Savor in the courage of life for the fallen apple
Taste and know the first of many journeys
Everyday new spices will gently transform your legacy

Remain in my hands high above ground
Bear witness to my never-ending labor
My only wish, to know what you are made of

Hear You

I sit here and listen
For your voice in the air

Breath frozen within my chest
Stolen noises dismissed without care

It is your first whisper
It is your first wail

Fiercely you make your call
First Love's grasp from your heart you entail

New upon the world an infant's silhouette
My eyes upon you are tempted to spy

But I hold them shut tight
For I yearn to hear your first cry

Treasured melodies for which I wait
Memories and lyrics none easily compare

I sit here and listen
For your voice in the air
