Past lyrics change

Notes from our childhood flow through the car
As once forgotten memories come alive
with each voice that joins
A song meant to bring back simpler times
As smiles fill the car
Lyrics only broken by laughter
When we get them wrong
Our eyes shining in the street lights
Catching the light just right

But that shine is just a fight
Against tears yet to be shed
As we pretend not to look back at the place our grandma lies
Wishing we could hold her hand
Just one last time

They paved the way

Survivors
Not victims
Survivors
They are the ones who screamed to be heard
So now we only have to whisper
They fought when no one believed
When they were shamed, isolated, attacked
But they kept going
Even when they couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel
And on their way they left lanterns for us so we wouldn’t be stuck in the dark like them

Death a friend?

Ma tells me death is a cruel and unforgiving man
But I can’t see how that’s true when you look at all he has done

He was the one who heard papa’s cries and guided him back to his once lost love

Death was the one who took mercy on those who spent their nights screaming in agony

And after dad lost his hair and started to act weird Death was the one who lead him back to himself in a place far from here

And when a young teen sobs for help in the dead of night where even the sun can’t seem to reach them Death is there to embrace them
Death is the one who whispers to them that it’s okay now and they won’t be hurt any longer

Yet Death is the one people blame when they can’t see that life is just as cruel as they claim him to be

You would never still love me

“You’re so pretty” you say
But will you still think the same when my shorts roll up
When you get a glimpse of my ugly scars
Or when I freeze as your hands touch my thigh
As I’ve never learned how to accept that with the same hunger it’s given
All I do is freeze and desperately try to get my fathers hands out of my mind

“You always get through the hard times it’s inspiring” You proudly tell me
But would you think the same if you knew that I never won those battles
I never got through them I just learned to live with the war waging in my head

“You always forgive people it’s admirable”
But I know you would never think the same if you could hear my thoughts
Hear how my hatred only festered more once I stoped speaking it aloud
Or how I rely on my hatred as if it’s the key to immortality

“I love you” you tell me
But it’s not me you love
Well not the real me only the mask I’ve carefully made
Because underneath I’m just broken shards of glass that I tried to tape back together
And you wouldn’t piece me back together because then you would get cut too
So I’ll keep my mask on and add more tape when the shards of who I once was get to sharp
