the glassblowers

beautifully sweating
with fiery fantasy they conjure out
of loose sand
the bizarre forms
of translucent flowers
                       birds
                       shells...
in every tremor
of their strained muscles and breath
rustles… a sea

the ways of God

a gingery summer morning – Sunday
scent of cinnamon
I don’t want to rise...
softly opening my eyes
I see you standing in the doorway
in a sheer nightshirt
hands all white with flour
and I long to be your...
lover

nothing more

I mostly dream
of your brick-coloured body…
blendig the soft brown earth
from the Yellow River valley
with the bronze dust of Mauritania
and the damp red clay
from the Amazon delta
it's all just longing...
                                nothing more

when the clay is scorched

so little is enough for me
on the loggia in the summer
through half-closed eyes...
the regular ping of a tennis ball
the scissor-like flights of swallows
the shunting of factory wagons
cheerful chatter from the café...
I hope it never ends

sometimes

I hide behind dreams
both beautiful and wounding…
please dim the light
and still your beating heart
love will come…
another time

my gran’s youth

maidens in the stream
are washing clothes together
their colorful skirts
are so daringly tucked up...
the lads guard their fishing rods

moment of transience

once in the dead night
while serving in the army
I had a visit...
a silent bat was flying
around me for my pleasure

the soul of India

the first glimmers of morning
are reflected on the lake in Jaipur
temple dancers-devadasi
in a tangle of hands and long-haired shadows
welcome the new day like cobras...
while women on the shore (blow after blow)
are pounding their laundry –
they want to punish life…
LIFE which is neither bad nor good
just flows like water…

face

my mum sits in an armchair
wrapped in a blanket
with a rosary in her hands
(it's a bleak evening)
on the table… apple pie
as it vanishes – the dark deepens…
only the moon behind the window
is the same

the burden of years

I’m counting the days
like faded rosary beads...
light’s losing its gloss
in old dusty memories
my forgotten passion lies
