the space you left behind

there is a space you left behind,
and it still calls your name,
like an empty room echoing with your laughter
i tried to fill it,
but nothing fits
in the space you left behind

looking at someone new,
curly hair spilling like waves,
tracing the pattern of each curl,
while my eyes keep searching
for the straight lines of your hair,
for the way you were my summer
after my longest winter.

i tell my friends, “i hate him,”
but really, i don’t.
the only thing i hate
is the space you left.
i could never hate you—
because there was nothing
about you to hate.

and maybe even because
i know i would let you back
into that space
in
a
heartbeat.

when recess lasted forever

my backpack used to swallow me whole
now i barely notice it on my shoulders

recess felt like it lasted forever
like the sun never went down

one friend moved to Fairfield and stopped texting
some just stopped sitting with me

the trees by the fence have changed
but i can’t tell if its them or me

the bell still rings the same
sharp and impossible to ignore

but sometimes i wonder
when the last normal day was
or the last time my parents carried me

time didn’t wait for me
it just kept going.

what tender things become

poem 1 - luca and lilyanna
a hush in the hall,
my heart starts to call.
brown eyes, a gleam,
like a half-forgotten dream.

each doorway i face,
a hopeful quick pace.
will he be there then ?
to smile once again.

brown eyes so deep,
all the secrets they keep.
a teenage love, true,
just me and you.

luca and lilyanna too,
names whispered soft, new.
a future we see,
brown eyes looking at me.

poem 2 - fading away
shattered glass, a broken vow,
luca, lilyanna, just a dream now.
empty cribs, where laughter slept,
a promise broken, a secret kept.

my fault, perhaps, i aimed too high,
chasing stars across the sky.
he’ll be my focus, my sun, my all,
i’ll catch him if he begins to fall.

school doesnt matter, degrees can wait,
just him beside me, sealing my fate.
please come back, my sweet, sweet boy,
lets find our laughter, rediscover our love and joy.

remember that night, the stars were so bright ?
when your first “i love you” felt so warm and right.
i’m sorry with all my might,
i want it back, with all it’s light.

i pray and beg, but silence remains,
a heavy echo of heartaches and pains.
hes not coming back, no matter my pleas,
just shattered hopes and dreams.
