They Moved Something

They never know what their gaze whispers, or how quietly it bends the way I feel.

By Day or By Night, I Still Wish You In My Sight

By day, I turn the thought of him into anger and let it harden. By night, I ache for his knock, for him to cross the threshold and find his way back to me.

Sometimes

Sometimes I swear that car slowing down is you even though I never even knew what you drive, never had anything real to recognize. Sometimes a song won’t leave my head and I convince myself it’s haunting you too. Sometimes the dog barks at nothing and my heart stumbles over hope, thinking maybe this time you finally showed up. Sometimes I see you everywhere. In audiences. In hallways. In the empty seat in front of me. Sometimes I would bet my life it’s you. But sometimes it isn’t. It never is. Sometimes it’s just strangers. Just noise. Sometimes it’s just my mind dressing up absence in delusion. Sometimes I really think I’m losing it. Like I’ve misplaced my mind, my heart, my grip on anything solid. Sometimes I want to shake myself and say it’s just you. It’s only you. Sometimes I know you are not at the door. Sometimes I know you are not almost here. Sometimes I know you are not coming. And sometimes that reckless, humiliating part of me still listens anyway.

The Risk of Believing

My own longing too often fabricates my history. Did you love me? That will remain a question I alone can never answer. For my heart’s perception exclaims “yes!” while the true reality, untouched by my desire, remains hidden from me and may hold my deepest disappointment. So I continue gazing at the dazzling threads of my soul, weaving a tapestry of dreams and risks, singing a song of enchantment. But perhaps the magic was never you, only my blind willingness to believe.

Annotations of the Heart

Every meaningless sigh, every passing glance, I read them all like a love letter I myself would write. Small gestures meant to mean something.

Memorized Laughter

I love him like he is my heartbeat, I miss him like he is my shadow, and I worry like he is all I have. And yet, I barely know the sound of his real laughter, only the one I’ve memorized from a thousand conversations we’ve never had.

Memory Kept You, I Didn’t

I will now never forget it when I hear that song or the way the new girl says hello. So much of life still belongs to him. The first one I truly loved. But I do not. For that was the last time my heart would beat that rhythm.

Simply A Girl

How weak I feel, that I’ve lived, breathed, and died for you for so many years. You, who were simply a boy. You died to a life in my path and lived and breathed for the innocent, the lovely, the mesmerizing. And yet I could not think less of you for it. I, who was simply a girl.

I Never Loved You

How can I make you see that every cruel word you leave on the people I love does not fade. It sinks into me, takes root, and a bitter flower begins to bloom in the shape of you. The same sharp thorns you cast towards others turn in my thoughts until, quietly, they begin to point back at you. They score their message into me as the bitter flower opens in my mind: I never loved you and I certainly never will.

Borrowed Reality

I turned a soul I lost into a home again inside my mind, a moment that barely existed into a love story, and glances into devotion, until my heart’s inventions grew louder than reality. Now I stand between what was and what I created, unable to tell which one is truly breaking me.
