a little balm and a little honey

in every pack of pistachios there are
one or two shells which are resistant to
the fingernail the addictive leverage
the satisfying splitting apart

you put them aside and save them for later
meanwhile pick, click, chew and finally
return to the awkward ones
refusing to yield their treasure

curse them go ahead curse them you won't
be defeated, you will solve their riddle
you will break their will
maybe they can be persuaded
by tiny hammer or rolling pin

we don't have a rolling pin
but don't we have a nutcracker somewhere
there was one at christmas, and
something else happens more wine
a movie some family business and the
two nuts stay on the edge of the table

waiting to be splintered or just tossed in
the trash in the cold morning light

The days pass, the weeks pass

Could we not at least exchange some crummy
anecdotes about our recent pasts
some poorly recalled bus stop or shop incidents
semi memories of there was this time when

I'll take any half digested subvocal passing thoughts
and an inappropriate and unvoiced yet sincerely held
opinion which you know is safe with me

Throw me a crumb here and I'll toss you
the whole hog utilising my award-winning
(and vigorous) masculine muscles

Instead of flinging it angry apelike
into the webvoid in the form of
incoherent cackhanded freeposts
begging for any minor engagement

How long must he wait?

How perversely exciting it used to be, in
the months after you made your decision
to abandon this hopeless situation
meaning [rueful laughter] the UK, not so much
the shattered bones of you and me

I was still hanging on, a faithful puppy
getting up early and heading out to Heathrow
to provide the welcome committee
and then I went straight to work? and where
did you go on those days?

I forget you had other friends, and
that strangely I wasn't the epicentre
of your multiverse

30 years have passed
the children you had with Wolfgang cycle shorts
may even have children now, but
Facebook won't furnish me with that information

On those airport journeys I always listened to
the Blood on the Tracks cassette
I found in the office 'library', a source of much wonder
which also included rare volumes, magazines
and actual vinyl. They didn't appreciate what they had
and neither, here comes the punch-
line, did I

Here we are, how I wish we weren't

This timid heart a 200bpm rabbit
not like that you vulgarian
like a frightened excitable permanently pulsating
come on
mammal living some say existing
largely underground
afrightened and ascurvy

Riddled with the pestilence
of forgotten decades
and winters long gone
which laid down their stains
upon the landscape
frosted thistles and tree circles
yet all it takes is a kind word

Oh Mr Dickens
a mere sniff never mind a teaspoonful of gruel
the tiniest glimmer
of hope in the form
of a one-line response

No matter how indifferent, ineffectual
or shadow insolent
just keep
hanging on
that's what you do best

Just keep hanging on
until that one day...

There is no longer one more day
but at least you held on with
elasticated hope until that final day which
if you care to think about it
is something, but then again

Running

sprayed by some raindrops

look up the sky purest blue

a breeze in the trees

Watchtower

So we grow older it cannot be denied
and we grow to like this little life
this smaller, quieter style
less of this and none of that
and how does that suit you
with all your bits falling apart

Now look, there
on the outskirts
see the dust, rising
it's the future calling us in
our names are in its dirty mouth
our names are on its filthy list

Unlimited Kilometres

It seems like your finances have evaporated
but don't fret sweetheart
today I emerged victorious
with a small sum of money
and wish your dear soul to share in this joy

So let the poetic
beauty of turning setbacks
into opportunities
inspire you to navigate
the realms of financial security

Plus, choose reward
for your unwavering commitment
"USB Charging Donut" OR
"Insulated Trunk Organizer"

Compassion for all Living Creatures

But not the interminably hopeless daddy longlegs
some say cellar spiders also know as the cranefly
lurking amidst the shower curtain then
flapping wildly all around my hat
just not first thing on
a Monday morning when stark staring
and uncoffeed thus it must
be duly despatched with an implement
humanely and meanwhile the water's
spraying in all directions

Later on leaving my nosy neighbour beckons
from her window and announces
there's a wet patch on the outside wall
you must have a leaky bath
you'll want to get that sorted and
I'm already late and it's the dullest
blanket grey dullest cold beans for breakfast
not that you have time for it
dead nothing morning and I wish you the best of
luck with the rest of it

Turning it on

Isn't it transparent
how the water always looks the same
- life is wet!

Still, the tap (US faucet) gets stuck at times
tight, stiff, trapped
a spanner (US wrench) may be required
for the loosening

But once it flows again
it flows again, until
the return of the indifferent drought

Some days a mere trickle
- barely enough to keep a body alive -
other times, the cursing and
the yanking

And days when the correct tools
cannot be located
- borrowing takes place,
the quick fix

Other beverages are available, of course
but they lack the purity, and the clarity
of the haitch the aitch and the oh

The Handsomest Young Man in England

I stood
in front
of my class

and cried
biscuits
over you

squirting out
my elegant tears
like fish eggs

while you
took selfies
in a muscle shirt
that read

'Don't be such a mermaid'
