The Monster Under The Bed

I no longer check under the bed for monsters,
I don't run when I turn out the light,
Or hide under my blanket when I hear a noise,
I don't run up the stairs, scared to look behind,
I no longer cry for my mom to check the closet.
Not because I don't believe,
But because I have found worse monsters.

At first they arrived in fury,
Cabinets slamming.
Feet stomping.
Voices screaming.
But that was only the beginning.

You see,
I could run from those monsters.
I found comfort in small spaces,
spaces the monsters couldn't reach me.
That was until I started seeing monsters everywhere.

Not only in my home but in the streets,
in the grocery store,
in the halls,
even in the people around me.

No matter what I did it felt like the monsters were surrounding me,
Suffocating me,
Leaving me no air to breathe.

As I grew older I began to realize those monsters weren't real.
The real monster appeared in flashing lights,
Bright screens,
Pictures,
Mirrors,

It turns out,
The real monster
Was me.

The monsters I had seen as a kid?
Those had been me.
MY imagination.

The monsters I had always seen all around me?
That was also me,
refusing to see the bad in myself.

And lastly,
The monster in the mirror.
It was my own reflection.

Each time I wake I see the monster grow,
Slowly consuming more of me,
Taking over everything.
My interests.
My talents.
My personality.
The things that make me really me.

I no longer check under the bed for monsters,
I don't run when I turn out the light,
Or hide under the blanket when I hear a noise,
I don't run up the stairs, scared to look behind,
I no longer cry for my mom to check the closet.

Instead,
I close my eyes and think of the monsters in my head.

Wake Up!

Wake up.
Wake up!
I tried to pry my eyes open.
Wake up.
I clawed and clawed at my open eyes.
I could not wake.
Why could I not wake from this nightmare?
Wake up.
I stopped fighting.
I could feel it coming back.
Everything came back.
It played before my eyes once again.
Over.
And over.
And over again.
Make it stop.
Please.
Wake up.
Tears escaped my eyes as it played again.
There was nothing I could do.
No matter how hard I fought.
I could not wake.

One cannot wake from reality.

All The Way Down

I just don't want to hurt you.
There is so much going through my mind.
All the feelings drown me,
The waves hit me and knock me down.
Down.
All the way down,
Until my face is in the sand and I can't breathe.
I just don't want to hurt you.
But as my lungs fill with salty water
I'm just left with my thoughts.
Thoughts I could never tell you.
So I write them instead.
I just don't want to hunt you.
It's as simple as that.
Even though my throat stings as the sandy water fills it,
And the pressure inside me grows.
I just don't to hurt you.
So I lay.
Allowing the waves to pull me under.
So far down.
Down.
All the way down.
I feel the growing pressure.
Almost enough to crack my skull,
Allowing all my thoughts to spill out.
But you always pull me out.
Im very grateful,
But I still feel like I'm hurting you,
Because in the end,
I created the oceans that drown me.
They are filled with all the mistakes I make,
All the things I do that hurt you,
But yet,
You save me.
Sometimes I wish you didnt save me.
That you would let me drown in my thoughts,
Let the pressure build up until I pop.
Just as long as my thoughts don't spill out,
And I don't hurt you.
